Study on the Potentiality of Aquaculture in the Teesta Barrage Irrigation System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Physico-chemical parameters viz. depth (65-269 cm), transparency (31-60 cm) water temperature (16.00-35.7oC), DO (2.64-5.91mg/l), pH (2-7.7), alkalinity (30-105 mg/l),Nitrate-Nitrogen (0.04-0.17 mg/l), Phosphate-Phosphorus (0.01-0.21 mg/l),TDS (0.04-0.24µg/l) were found congenial for aquatic life in the Teesta Barrage Irrigation System. The average depths of the main and secondary canal were ranges from 65 to 269 cm. A total of seven planktonic groups consisting of 34 genera were identified from waters, of which dominant group of phytoplankton structure were Bacillariophyceae>Chlorophyceae>Cyanophyceae. Total numbers of phytoplankton was recorded to range between 16.88 x 103 to 19.38 x 103 cells/L and zooplnkton 4.69 x 103 to 7.23 x 103 cells/L. The soil of the canal rich with respect to organic carbon (1.21% to 1.49%), available phosphorus (15.57 to 19.65 µg/g soil) and sulfur (56.57 to 70.72 µg/g soil) but the pH values were slightly acidic (5.99-6.32). A total of 34 fish were identified in the catches of different gears used by the fishermen in the canal. Results as well as proper management policy might help fisheries development such as– “floating cage culture” in main canal area, “pen culture” in secondary and tertiary canal area and “community based fish culture” in certain area of Teesta canal.

Objectives:

The broad objective of the study is to assess the aquaculture potential in the canals systems. The following specific objectives are to be covered: To determine the physico-chemical and biological properties of canals waters for potential aquaculture; to know the status of fisheries diversity and its dynamics; and to find out the suitable culture technique to increase fish production per unite area.

Methodology:

Water temperature, turbidity, conductivity and pH were measured by a water quality checker. DO, CO₂ and alkalinity were measured by titration method. TSS, Un-ionized NH3 and Nitrite (NO₃) was measured following the procedures recommended by the Standard Methods. This concentrated plankton sample was preserved in 5% formalin solution and stored in small-sealed plastic bottles until examination. The numerical enumeration of both phytoplankton and zooplankton was done by Sedgewick-Rafter (S-R) counting cell and identify up to genus level.

Achievement/Findings:

The Teesta Barrage irrigation systems are just like an open water ecosystem. Generally, the open waters with the characteristics of a great diurnal change of water temperature, high organic matter content and the higher dissolved oxygen level. While in the Teesta Barrage irrigation eco-systems the plants and animals complement and interact with each other. The organized food chains produced various materials (living and non-living, organic and inorganic, molecular and ionic) that interact with the other biological, chemicals and physical activities in Teesta Barrage irrigation eco-systems. As a result, soil in the fields made fertile, the structure of the water and soil is improved, insect pest, the primary productivity and aquaculture potentials. This study provided information about socio-economic aspects of fish farmers and culture inputs used. Empirical data and information study on water quality, fisheries diversity and aquaculture potentials in the Teesta Barrage irrigation canals systems will provide to formulate a proper technology which can ultimately to boost up the fish production.
