Study on Antibiotics and Growth Promoters in Poultry.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Chemical residues in poultry and poultry products are becoming a concern for public health due to the improper use of drugs/feed additive in the poultry industry. Considering the present situation of drug abuse and paucity of information on these practices three studies (Training impact on use of feed additives and drugs, drug residue detection in broiler meat at in-situ and ex-situ condition and validation of declared withdrawal periods of antibiotics) were conducted under this project. Training and monitoring can play a vital role in changing the existing malpractice of use of drug and can minimize the poultry production cost of farmers who have no practical knowledge on above mentioned practice. Observed drug residue level in poultry meat in-situ (broiler farm) and ex-situ (market) condition were very high which is not safe for human health. A high tissue concentration of different broad-spectrum antibiotics was found in broiler meat in market places which was similar in broilers in control study where antibiotics were administered and meat was analyzed between 1-3 days. Validation of declared withdrawal periods of antibiotics showed no agreement on recommended withdrawal period. Drug residue level in ex-situ (market) condition was very high than in-situ (broiler farm) condition. Training and awareness building for using antibiotics in chicken to produce safe poultry products may play important role to overcome the situation.

Objectives:

A different type of diseases prevails in their premises and drugs have been used indiscriminately by the traders to save their birds from dying at marketing point. It may be the major source of antibiotics in the finished poultry products. High tissue concentration of different broad-spectrum antibiotics was found in marketed poultry but could not decide what facts were. Considering the present situation of drug abuse and paucity of information on this matter the studies mention where in after were conducted.

Methodology:

1. Location and target group: The target group of this survey was small and medium scale poultry farmers in Jaypurhat TDA, Jaypurhat & Mokamtola TDA, Bogra. 2. Sample size: Even number (50) of farmers selected from each group (Trained and non trained group) and each location (Jaypurhat TDA, Jaypurhat & Mokamtola TDA, Bogra). 3. Survey method: Face to face interview method using pre-tested well-structured questionnaire was used for this survey. 4. Statistical analysis: Simple descriptive statistics (frequencies, means etc.) except for profitability and complex analyses (Z-test) for profitability assessment were used to analyzed data obtained from the survey.

Achievement/Findings:

Training and awareness build-up of peoples could play vital role in changing the existing pattern of unethical use of antibiotics in chicken to produce safe poultry products. Selling ban (open live poultry) on open market could play vital role on the minimizing antibiotic residues in finished poultry products. All the withdrawal period stated on the drugs was not true in preventing in the country.
