Bi-culture of Shrimp (penaeus Monodon) with Brackishwater Catfish (mystus Gulio)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study the impact stocking Mystus gulio with Penaeus monodon in brackishwater ponds. Mystus gulio was stocked at three stocking densities (2-4 Nos/m2) with Penaeus monodon at 2 Nos/m2. Shrimps were fed with commercial pellet feed and fishes were fed with feed prepared from locally available ingredients. After 50 days of culture growth of shrimp was 10-12g and fish was 6-8 g.

Objectives:

To evaluate the impact of introducing brackishwater catfish (Mystus gulio) on the growth and production of shrimp (Penaeus monodon) in pond farming system; and to investigate the economic feasibility of diversified aquaculture production system in shrimp farm.

Methodology:

To evaluate the effect of introducing the catfish Mystus gulio, species combination of Penaeus monodon and Mystus gulio was studied. A stocking density of M. gulio (20,000-40,000/ha) with P. monondon (20,000/ha) was maintained in nine brackishwater ponds of 1000 m2 each. The soil of the ponds was treated with lime (Quick lime: dolomite:: 1:1) @ 250 kg/ha and filled with tidal water upto a depth of 1.0m. Water of the ponds was treated with rotenone and dipterex @ 1.5 ppm to kill the unwanted animals and then fertilized with urea, TSP and MP @ 2.5 ppm, @ 3.0 ppm and 1.0 ppm respectively. After production of sufficient plankton, post larvae (PL) of shrimp were stocked in the in-pond nursery prepared by encircling 5~6% area in one corner of each pond with nylon net fastened to bamboo frame. After 3rd week, juvenile shrimps were allowed to spread throughout the culture pond by opening the nursery enclosure and at the same time fingerlings of Mystus gulio (ABW, 2~3 g) were stocked. Commercial pellet feed (Saudi-Bangla) was supplied to shrimp, while fish was fed with locally formulated feed with a mixture of fine rice bran (20%), mustard oil cake (15%), fish meal (40%), soybean meal (20%), wheat flour/molasses (4%) and vitamin premix (1%) @ 5%-3% of estimated body weight. Liming of the ponds with dolomite @ 100 kg/ha and fertilization with urea @ 1.2 ppm and TSP @ 1.5 ppm was continued at monthly interval. Evaporated water was replenished with tidal water.

Achievement/Findings:

Due to the invasion of disease in shrimp, farmers became very cautious to culture shrimp in their ghers. Introduction of fish species (Mystus gulio) may improve the ecosystem of the ghers. This may help shrimp to escape from invasion of disease. As a result, overall production from unit ghers may be increased. In case of mortality of shrimp due to invasion of disease, farmers will get the investment return from the production of fish. The technique generated through this study could help shrimp farmers getting extra income.
