Impact of Weed Management Practices of Boro Rice Cultivation in Some Selected Sites of Comilla

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Most of the labor at the Comilla site was hired (48.8%). Another 25% were migrant labor that did all other agriculture activities. This indicates that there is labor scarcity in the area. As a result labor wage rate is relatively high (TK.120/day).About 60% farmers reported that weed infestation was worse than average. Ninety eight percent area was irrigated under deep tube well irrigation. Application of herbicide is more profitable than Push Weeder and Hand weeding. Argold is more effective than other herbicide but Ronstar is less effective. Among several reasons three factors contributed more on why farmers are not using herbicide and those are ranked as (1) herbicide spraying machine is highly essential; (2) standing water should be the plot at least for one week and (3) farmers fear of using of herbicide deteriorates the soil quality in the plot.At present very few farmers used herbicide due to lack of knowledge but they express that they will use more in future. Results from the demonstration as well as experimental plots herbicides use have created awareness about the usefulness of herbicides.

Objectives:

To describe some socio-economic and bio physical profiles of the study area;
To determine the labor use for weed management in rice cultivation;
To examine the comparative profitability of manual weeding verses herbicide use; and
To know the farmers perceptions about herbicide for controlling weed in their rice fields.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two purposively selected thanas under Comilla district. The thanas are: Comilla Sadar & Burichang. Two villages (i.e. one village from each thana) were also purposively selected. BRRI Agronomy Division chose six farmers from each village for conducting weed management experiment. In addition, ten farmers from each village were selected further demonstrating weed management practices. Data for socio-economic study were collected from all 16 farmers from each village. Moreover, ten farmers from the same village who are not involved with this experiment or demonstration were selected as the sample farmers and data on their own practices for weed management were generated. Collected data were analyzed using statistical tools and results are presented in easy form.
