Farmers Participatory Experiment on Rice Seed Storage at Chuadanga

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Container additives and times has significant effect in moisture content and germination. Insect damage seed are also effect in additives and times.Plastic drum container found lower moisture and higher germination compared to earthen pot and jute sacks. Number of insect damage seed, number of insect and moldy seed was found lower in plastic drum containers compared to the other container. When seed was treated with neem leaves during seed storage, germination percent is higher compared to control and chalk powder and naphthalene. Neem leaves treated seed gave good performance in seed germination compared to others.Increasing storing duration moisture content also increased and the number of insects per hundred seeds increased with the increase in storing duration. It was also found that with the increase in storing duration the moisture content also increased. It was also appeared that number of insects per hundred seeds increased with the increase in storing duration.

Objectives:

To compare the different storage containers on Boro seed germination; and
To assess additive effects on storage seed.

Methodology:

Data were collected from Rice seed health Improvement sub Project (SHIP), Chuadanga site. Thirty Farmers were selected from Amirpur village of Chuadanga sadar upazila who were participating SHIP activities. Two seasons Boro and T.Aman were covered for this experiment. Different additives and container were supplied from the SHIP. Necessary data were collected using predesigned questionnare . Collected data were analyzed using simple statistical tools.
