With a view to increase the productivity of existing backyard livestock and poultry productions systems and thereby improve the socioeconomic status of the rural people. BLRI in collaboration with Department of Livestock Services (DLS) initiated the study since April/2010 in Belkuchi Upazila under Serajganj district and Naikhongchari Upazila under Banderban district. The study was planned towards reducing morbidity and mortality of animals and birds through routine vaccination and proper medication, awareness build-up for technology adoption through training, increase productivity of existing stock under subsistence farming conditions through technological interventions and livelihood improvement of livestock community. The major activities of the project were: i) baseline survey, ii) mass vaccination and healthcare services of livestock and poultry, iii) service-provider’s and farmer’s training, iv) video documentation and, v) impact study. During one year, all the activities were completed and the results indicated positive responses to technological interventions in regard to reduced mortality and increased productivity. Number of all animals and birds increased within one year period, the incremental rate being higher in Belkuchi (10-59%) and lower in Naikhongchari (6-30%). As initial task, baseline survey in both the locations representing 321 and 218 households respectively was completed to assess the asset possession status, identify existing livestock species with level of productivity, find out feed situation and disease occurrence, and constraints faced by farmers. All activities of the project were documented through video and presented in the Annual Research Review Workshop 2010-11.

The specific objectives of the survey were to i) Assess the asset possession and wealth capability of the farming community; ii) Identify the existing livestock species along with level of productivity and farming practices; iii) Find out the feed situation and available diseases affecting productivity of livestock species; iv) Sort out gender analysis in livestock rearing; v) Assess household economics in relation to income and expenses; and vi) Find out constraints and problems faced by farmers in livestock production.

The survey was done with a structured questionnaire. Data were collected through face to face interviewing of every family head in the village. A focus group discussion was also carried out of supplement the survey data. A total of 218 farm households of the village were categorized into landless, marginal, small medium and large based on their landholdings (BBS, 2005; Hossaihn and Newwa, 2005). As most of the farmers had acres of fallow land and were not getting any return, thus the fallow land was not taken into account for categorizing, landless farm families were dominating (50.91 % of the total) in the village followed by small (21.56 %), marginal (13.30) medium (12.84 %) and large (1.37%). Landless, marginal, small, medium and large farm families owned on an average 0.723. 2.189, 2.491, 6.885 and 19.469 acres of land including homestead pond, crop and fallow land respectively. Irrespecive of farm size, 10.84% of the total land is occupied by dwelling house along with homestead garden, 23.72 % by pond/ditch, 26.18 % engaged in field crop production and only 39.24 remained fallows in the village. On an average each landless, marginal, small, medium and large farm family had 5.47, 6, 6.27 and 8.1 and 12.66 heads, respectively which if higher than the national average. The following method were took for that experiment- i) Asset possession, ii) Livestock and poultry inventory, iii) Feed and Fodder, iv) Livestock and poultry health perspective and Gender analysis.

Survey findings indicate that a considerable number of farmers have no cropland and mostly dependent on daily wage labor, Number the livestock and poultry species is poor due to shortage of feed and disease outbreak. Productivity of these animals is also poor in the village. FMD and ND are the major disease heavily affecting morbidity and mortality as well as productivity of animals. Disease outbreak along with inadequate house facility and storage of fees are the major factors limiting the productivity of the animals in the village. After one year, impact study results and increased productivity. However, impact study based on one year data may not adequately represent the true picture of the community. In order to draw solid conclusions’. The study needs repetitions for at least one year in the same locations with additional interventions. Additional 1 or 2 locations in other AEZ may also be chosen to test the model prior to large-scale dissemination.
