Studies on Stress Pheromone for Repelling Rat from Its Habitat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out in the Vertebrate Pest Division, BARI, Gazipur to repel the rodents from their habitat by inducing stress. Study revealed that stress pheromone don’t reduce the consumption of food in laboratory study. In the field, stress pheromone treated plot, slightly higher damage (73.34%) than the control plot (56.08%).

Objectives:

To evaluate the repellency of rats using stress pheromone from the wheat field.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory and simulated field of Vertebrate Pest Division of BARI, Gazipur. Animals: Adults lesser Bandicoot rat Bandicota Bengalensis (Gray) were collected from the wheat field and poultry farm by trapping (live trap). The animals were kept under laboratory condition for at least 3 weeks for acclimatization. Adult male rats were used as pheromone donors and a jar containing 2 liter of purified water was used for pheromone extraction. An adult male rat was forced to swim in the jar. The rat was dipped in water and the rat was teased or beaten by a stick to create a stress full situation for 15 minutes confinements. Five rats were released in the pheromone jar and teased. After extraction stress pheromone, it was offered to the rats in two ways. One- in the individual cages to observed food consumption and two, to Spray in the simulated crop (wheat) field to evaluate the repellency at their habitat Bi- choice feeding test: Alarm pheromone containing water was sprayed in the food cup with wheat grain another cup without pheromone Bi-choice feeding test in which 10 individually cages rats were offered 20 g in each bait without and with alarm pheromone in laboratory cages. Food consumption, taking into account the spillage was recorded for 3 days. Two enclosure plots were used in this experiment. Wheat seeds were sown in rows. Two rats were released in to each of the two enclosures during booting stage i.e. 60 day’s after sowing. Each of the plots was divided in to 2 parts. One part was sprayed with Stress-pheromone and other part with pure drinking water. No food was offered to the rats, Cut and uncut tillers and any physiological changes of wheat crop were taken.

Achievement/Findings:

Effects of stress pheromone on the consumption of food in laboratory are presented in No differences between consumption of stress pheromone treated wheat grain and untreated w.heat grain. Rat consumed more food from stress pheromone treated than untreated food. In simulated field test wheat damage was higher (73.34%) in stress pheromone treated plot than the control plot (56.08%). The damage was 30% higher in stress pheromone treated plot than the control plot. The yield was also lower in stress pheromone treated plot than the control plot.
