Amylose content of rice is important to determine the stickiness of a variety. Objective of this study was to help develop database on amylose content for newly developed hybrid lines. This study was conducted at Grain Quality and Nutrition Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. The of the study showed that  the Amylose content of imported 119 hybrid rice varieties was intermediate to low level, except six varieties.

To help develop database on amylose content for newly developed hybrid lines

The laboratory analysis was conducted at Grain Quality and Nutrition Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. Amylose content was determined by the procedure of Juliano (1771). Based on amylose content, milled rice was classified as waxy (1-2% amylose), very low (>2-9% amylose), low (>9-20% amylose), intermediate (>20-25% amylose) and high (25-33% amylose), (Juliano, 1972).

All of the 119 hybrid rice samples (99 varieties supplied by Seed Certification Agency and 20 from private companies) contain low to intermediate amylose content. Among the tested samples of hybrid rice only six varieties contain more than 25% amylose. It might be concluded that hybrid varieties containing low to intermediate amylose would not be accepted for cultivation or consumption in our country.
