Farmers’ Characterization in Rainfed Eastern Gangetic Plains of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of the study was to make a data base of the study sites that could be used to compare changes in farmers ‘livelihoods that may occur due to adoption of identified prototype technologies. Six villages from three upazillas were selected purposively. Thirty farmers’ different categories from each location were selected randomly. About 86% of the surveyed farmers were self-sufficient in rice production. Only 7% of the sampled farmers were rice self-sufficient up to 6-8 months and another 7% up to 10-11 months.

Objectives:

To make necessary adjustment of the identified prototype technologies for wider adoption in the targeted areas and recommendation domains.

Methodology:

Six villages from three upazillas (Jibon Nagor, Damurhuda of Chuadanga district and Suja Nagor of pabna district) were selected purposively. Of these six villages, three are the pilot villages where indentified prototype technology adoption process is going on and the other three are the neighboring of the pilot villages. Thirty farmers’ different categories (landless, marginal, small, medium and large) from each location were selected randomly. The sampled farmers were distributed as 20 (i.e. 10 drum seeder and 10 non-drum seeder farmers) from pilot village and 10 non-drum seeder farmers from the neighboring village.

Achievement/Findings:

i) The benchmark study was done to assess the future impact of the adoption of drum seeder. More than 50-70% of the total annual income came from the arable land which mostly used for crop cultivation followed by timbers. ii) More than 33% of the total rice marked was sold by the farmers just after harvest. This harvest sell was mainly due to want of cash spent for meeting their family needs and some were spent for cultivating next crops. iii) About 86% of the surveyed farmers were self-sufficient in rice production. Only 7% of the sampled farmers were rice self-sufficient up to 6-8 months and another 7% up to 10-11 months. iv) The household members were under employed. Agricultural can provide them only up to 5.18 months employment opportunity. Business and service in this case could provide up to 3.6 months employment opportunity per year. The female members of the households can spend up to 3.2 months of their work force for household and related activities.
