The Distribution, Abundance and Reproductive Biology of Threatened Endemic Fish Species Dinajpur: Potential for Gene Pool Conservation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 74 species from 20 families have been identified. Among them 63 species are indigenous and 11 exotic to Bangladesh, where 28 indigenous fishes are in the IUCN red list. Depending on the availability and demand three fishes namely Labeo ariza, Chagunius chagunio and Clupisoma garua are preliminarily selected to investigate the reproductive biological parameters.

Objectives:

Continuing the fishermen's survey to know the distribution and abundance of threatened fishes of Dinajpur district's region; collection of threatened fishes to study some aspects of reproductive biology of them; initiate the establishment of a small scale gene bank at HSTU to conserve the threatened endemic fishes of Dinajpur; and collection and preservation of threatened fish in formalin fixed condition to established a museum in the departmental laboratory.

Methodology:

The fishing communities from each river of Dinajpur were identified based on a three month long baseline survey for sampling. The baseline survey was conducted to know the farmer's livelihoods, their fishing history, their perception regarding fish species abundance and general trends of fish harvesting by using a semi structured questionnaire. From each identified operational site 5 fishermen were selected to know their daily average catches, name of available species and seasonal abundance by providing a simplified questionnaire.

Achievement/Findings:

It is mostly observed that the problems of massive siltation of river beds leading to thin flows of water in the dry season and floods in the rainy season which become threats to the riverine fishes of Dinajpur. During the dry season it is evident that water volume of these rivers become very limited which facilitates the indiscriminate fishing by fishermen. The entrance of exotic fishes to the rivers due to overflow of perennial ponds destroying the riverine ecosystem for native species. From the last 5 years very rapid change on fish biodiversity of Dinajpur district is observed by the fishermen. Now a days its very hard to maintain the livelihood of the fishermen.
