Promotion of Cost-effective Weed Management Practices for Favourable and Unfavourable Environments in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Weeds are the one of the main problem of rice cultivation. More than 50% yield may reduces due to weeds infestation. Objective of this study was to evaluate the labour utilization pattern and status of herbicide use in the locations and to assess comparative profitability of manual weedling versus herbicide use. The on-farm trials were evaluated using a structured questionnaire. Rice cultivation by using herbicide is more profitable than hand weeding. But at present very farmers used herbicide due to lack of knowledge and non-visual difference the effectiveness of herbicide use and non-use. Most of the laborers in Unfavourable Environment was hired (45%). In case of favourable environment 36% was migrant labour. This indicates that there is labour scarcity in the area.

Objectives:

To verify the land holding status of farmers in the study areas.
To evaluate the labour utilization pattern and status of herbicide use in the locations;
To assess comparative profitability of manual weedling versus herbicide use;
To know the farmers perceptions about herbicide use in rice cultivation.

Methodology:

The on-farm trials were evaluated using a structured questionnaire. The information was collected during field visit in late January 2004 and middle November 2005 in unfavourable environment (Rajshahi) and favourable environment (Comilla). When yield effects of treatments were clearly visible, but before the harvest of Boro and T. Aman crop. Information on labour requirements cost of seedling, transplanting, herbicide application and weeding was recorded by the field assistants during seasons. Data on yield was obtained through crop cuts in Rajshahi as well as Comilla district. Partial budgeting technique was used to determine the profitability of alternative weed control management in farmers’ field.

Achievement/Findings:

• Marginal category of farms is improving a bit in terms of land ownership status. • Most of the laborers in Unfavourable Environment was hired (45%). In case of favourable environment 36% was migrant labour. This indicates that there is labour scarcity in the area. • Rice cultivation by using herbicide is more profitable than hand weeding. But at present very farmers used herbicide due to lack of knowledge and non-visual difference the effectiveness of herbicide use and non-use. • Among several reasons two factors contributed more on why farmers are not using herbicide and those are ranked as i) standing water should be in the rice field at least for one week and ii) farmers fear of using herbicide deteriorates the soil quality.
