At present there are about 150000 commercial poultry in the country; most of them are in the rural areas. To assess the implication of small scale commercial poultry farms within and outside of poultry technology development and dissemination project (PTDDP). To measure the impact of PTDDP a study was carried out in the project area from January to May 2011. Data were collected a total of 381 beneficiary and 100 control farmers’ from 11 technology dissemination areas. Farms were categorized as: small (300-500 birds); medium (501 to 1000 birds) and, large (1001 to 2000 birds). Results indicated that majority of poultry farms (85%) are small farms and this business is adopted as major source of income, about 90% to the total farm income and 81 % to total household income derived from their farms. Whereas this percentage stands as 85% and 75% respectively in case of control farmers. Per capita consumption of chicken and other protein is noticeably higher for producing households than that of non-producers. The impacts of poultry farming spread beyond the farming households to the broader rural livelihoods. On an average the project farms employed 1.94 manpower compared to 1.20 of the control farms. Due to the adaptation of whole family approach woman participation rate in poultry farming increased to 38% compared to a baseline of 28% in pre-project period. Social status for the participating woman farmers also increased. It is therefore concluded that the differences between the project and control farmers can be attributed to the PTDDP training and subsequent adoption of practice promoted under the project.

i) Capacity development of the farmers on improved technologies. ii) Supply chain development for supply of quality feed and chicks at an affordable price, iii) Network development with livestock Research Institutes (LRI) and government extension agencies can provide farmers, an opportunity to optimize resource utilization for increase production and higher profit

The study was based on primary data collected from the poultry producers of 11 technology dissemination areas (TDAs) such as Shibgonj, Bogra; Joypurhat sadar, Joypurhat; Babugonj, Barisal; Dumoria, Khulna; Ranigonj, Dinapur; Baghabari, Sirajgonj; Kalihati, Tangail; Dhamrai, Dhaka; Joyantapur, Sylhet; Sunaimuri, Noakhali and Hathajari, Chittagong of PTDDP during pre project period (2006) and project period (2010). Before launching the survey the questionnaire was pre tested and improved accordingly. A total to 381 project farmers were included in the survey program. The impact of the study was evaluated by using on a “before-and-after, with-and-without’ technique. The hypothesis tested was that the long-term support provided by PTDDP utilizing technologies would lead to improved productivity, profitability, and efficiency among project farmers. The data collected from the respondent were tabulated and analyzed for fulfill the objective of the study. Mostly descriptive analysis was used to achieve the objectives. T-tests were conducted to compare the mean differences of the farmers. Knowledge was respondent was measured by asking five series of questions. The score assigned for all questions was given for each correct answer. The score range to be obtained by a respondent could vary from ‘0’ to ‘100’, where 0 indicating very low level knowledge in poultry farming and 100 indicating very high level knowledge in poultry farming. Social Participation Index (SPI) SPf x 3 + SPm x 2 + SP1 x 1 + SPn x 0. Where, SPF = Total number of women expressed full capacity of social participation for a statement; SPm = Total number of women expressed moderate capacity of social participation for a statement; SP1 = Total number of women expressed low capacity of social participation for a statement; SPn = Total number of women expressed no capacity of social participation for a statement; Thus, SPIs could range from 3 to 1143 for poultry household.

The results of the study s how that adoption of poultry farming technologies has a significant positive impact on the productivity, profitability and efficiency of project farms compared to control farms. There were no major differences in terms of socio-economic parameters such as household size, farm size, occupation, production practice and production size between the two groups therefore concluded that the differences between the project and control farmers can be attributed to the PTDDP training and subsequent adoption of practice promoted under the project. Where similar conditions exist the results and lessons learned from the project have direct application.
