Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Habigonj, Dinajpur, Faridpur,Rajshahi, Rangpur, Bogra and Comilla with the objectives to evaluate the yield potential and adaptability of advanced breeding lines at farmers' field and to get feedback information about the advantages and disadvantages of the advanced lines from farmers and DAE personnel. The result showed that location x genotype interaction was significant at 0.05 level for grain yield, panicles/m2, filled grains/panicle, 1000-grain weight, sterility%, plant height and growth duration. The test entries produced significantly different grain yields among the locations. However, BR7323-4B gave consistently better yield almost in all locations having highest average yield of 6.49 t/ha. All the lines and checks gave the higher yields at Habigonj than other locations because of the fertile land under single cropped area. Panicles/m2 was the highest (320) in the check variety, BRRI dhan28 followed by the line BR7323-4B (312). Grains/panicle was the highest in BR7166-50-1-Ran1 (114) followed by BR7166-5B-5 (103). Most farmers preferred BR7323-4B for its higher yield, shorter growth duration, good plant type, lodging tolerance and lesser diseases. However, farmers still preferred BRRI dhan28 mainly for its shorter duration.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield potential and adaptability of advanced breeding lines at farmers' field in different agro-ecological conditions.
To get feedback information about the advantages and disadvantages of the advanced lines from farmers and DAE personnel.

Methodology:

Five advanced lines, BR7323-4B, BR7166-5B-5, AS996, BR7166-50-1-Ran1 and IR7011-89-3-7 along with BR14 and BRRI dhan28 as checks were tested during Boro, 2009. The trials were replicated thrice in each location. The unit plot size for each variety/line was 37.8 m² . Seedling age varied from 35-40 days among locations under varied circumstances. Seeding time ranged from 24 November to 1 December, 2008 and transplanting time ranged from 1-12 January, 2009. Seedlings were transplanted at 25 x15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 100: 80: 60: 10: 3 kg. N :P₂O₅ : K₂O: S: Zn/ha. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 10-15, 30-35 and 50-55 (at PI stage) days after transplanting (DAT). Other standard management practices were followed as and when necessary. Appropriate measures were taken to control insect pests. Date of seeding, transplanting, flowering, maturity, plant height, lodging tolerance, pest and disease incidence, yield and yield components were recorded. Feedback from farmers and DAE personnel were also recorded. For yield estimation, 10 m² sample area from each plot was harvested at maturity and grain yields were adjusted to 14% moisture content.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest 1000 grain wt (25.7g) was found in AS996 followed by IR7011-89-3-7 (25.1g). Sterility% was the lowest (14.73) in BR7323-4B. All the advanced lines were found lodging tolerant in all the locations except at Dautkandi (Comilla), where IR7011-89-3-7 lodged by about 50% and BRRI dhan28 lodged by 100%. Considering grain yield, growth duration and other overall performances, BR7323-4B and AS996 may be considered in proposed variety trial (PVT).
