Comparative Study on Cost of Power Tiller and Country Plough Cultivation System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The land preparation cost of country plough per ha per ploughing in Rajshahi were found to be Tk.588.98 for hire basis and Tk.662.00 through calculation. Whereas the same was Tk. 640.00 for power tiller. The calculated corresponding figures at BRRI farm were Tk. 1116 for country plough and Tk. 584 for power tiller (Dong Feng).

Data collection: i) Weed density before and after land cultivation; ii) Soil bulk density and soil penetration strength before land cultivation; iii) Field capacity of cultivation; iv) Depth and width of cultivation; v) Effective tiller number; vi) Number of filled and unfilled grain per panicle; vii) Grain yield and 1000 grain per panicle; viii) Local hire charges of power tiller and country plough cultivation

Achievement/Findings:

The land was covered with high density of cynodon dactition grass (0.34-0.55 kg kg/m² ). The soil bulk density was (1.29-1.42 gm/cc). The weed was reduced due to plowing effect (0.001 to 0.004 kg.m² ) in Rajshahi farm. In BRRI farm Gazipur weed density was less (0.06-0.12 kg/m²). The plough pan was observed at 15 cm depth in Rajshahi and 25-30cm depth in Gazipur Farm. The average field capacity of country plough was 0.148 ha/ hr and 0.042 ha/hr in Rajshahi and BRRI farm Gazipur respectively. It was noted that about 45% land was unploughed between the two consecutive furrows at Rajshahi. The corresponding figure Gazipur farm was 47% (unplowed land between the furrow). The average field capacity of Yanmar tiller at Rajshahi and Dongfeng power tiller at Gazipur were 0.108 and 0.107 respectively. The average fuel consumption of Yamar power tiller wan found to be 1.25 l/hr and that of the Dong Feng tiller was 1.75 l/hr. The land preparation cost of the country plough per ha per plowing in Rajshahi was found to be Tk. 588.98 for hire basis and tk 662 through calculation. Whereas for power tiller per ha per tilling cost was found to be Tk 640.
