Productivity of Rice-fish Cultural in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to examine the adoption level of rice-fish production at the farm level and to estimate the productivity and profitability of rice-fish production at the rice fields. Three study locations were purposively selected under all floodplain ecosystems. The study results reveal that most of the farms practiced integrated rice-fish culture in Boro season. Per hectare net profit of pond-fish culture was found smaller than the integrated rice-fish farms.

Objectives:

To examine the adoption level of rice-fish production at the farm level.

Methodology:

The study was based on primary data collected through farm household survey. Three study locations were purposively selected under all floodplain ecosystems from Kishoregonj, Comilla and Chadpur districts. Then the study villages under eight upazila were selected from these three locations where demonstration plots under DSAP project existed and rice-fish systems were being practiced. A total number of 300 sample farmers (150 from Kishoregonj, 110 from Comilla and 40 from Chadpur) were selected using stratified random sampling technique.

Achievement/Findings:

i) The study results reveal that most of the farms practiced integrated rice-fish culture in Boro season, while a few farms were found to practice rice-fish cultivation in T. Aman seasons. Low land was comparatively suitable under integrated rice-fish farming than that of other types of land. Rice varieties cultivated under integrated rice-fish farming system were BR14, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan28 in Boro season while in T. In Aman season the cultivated varieties were BR11, Pajam, BRRI dhan32. ii) The fish breds stocked in the rice fields included Rui, Katla, Mrigel, all carps, Puti, Kalibaush, Telapia, Nylotica, Goinnya, Pungus etc. However, per hectare net profit of pond-fish culture was found smaller than the integrated rice-fish farms. Financial and technical support for rice-fish culture was found smaller than the integrated rice-fish farms. Financial and technical support for rice-fish integrated farming, quality fish seed and proper forecasting are needed for sustainable rice-fish culture in the study areas.
