Impact of Recent Changes in Livestock Production Pattern on Farm Families' Livelihood and Health in Selected Areas of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to determine the extent of changes in livestock holding and its production pattern and its impact on farm families’ livelihood and health. The study was conducted in four districts namely Mymensingh, Sunamganj, Sirajganj and Gaibandha. Data were collected from 200 (50 from each district) respondents using semi-structured questionnaire. No definite trend was observed with respect to goat, sheep and poultry population irrespective of districts. The study revealed that milk, meat and egg production fluctuated following no consistent trend with respect to feed availability in different months within a year production varied from 142 to 219 kg and the range for egg production was 124 to 690 numbers. Thus irrespective of regions, farmers overall livelihood status showed an improving trend. With respect to the dynamics of nutrition availability of farm families, the per capita consumption of different food items per day from 2008 to 2010 was estimated. It was revealed that consumption of main food item, rice was higher than the national average (739.6 grams) in Mymensingh and Sunamganj and lower than national average in Gaibandha and Sirajganj. Beef consumption showed a declining trend in Mymensingh and an increasing trend in Gaibandha but fluctuated in Sirajganj where it showed a fluctuating situation

Objectives:

The overall obdective of the study is to assess the impact of recent changes in livestock production pattern on farm families’ livelihood and health in selected area sof Bangladesh. The specific objectives are as follows: i) to determine the extent of changes in livestock holding pattern over the past decades; ii) To determine production trend and extend of milk, meat and eggs at farm levels and their availability to the farm families; iii) To assess employment creation, income generation and livelihood of the livestock farmers; and iv) To determine dynamics of nutrition availability of farm families.

Methodology:

Study areas were selected form Trisal, Gaffargaon, Muktagachha, Gauripur and Mymensingh Sadar Upazila of Mymensingh district under Dhaka division, Bishwamvarpur and Sadar Sunamganj Upazilas of Sunamganj district under Sylhet division, Kazipur Upazila of Sirajganj district under Rajshahi division, Fulchhori and Saghatta Upazilas of Gaibandha district under Rangpur division. Fifty livestock farmers were selected from each of the four districts who were involved in livestock rearing. Field survey method was followed to collect primary data for three years. Data were collected from respondents by using semi-structured interview schedule and conducting FGD for group information. After collecting necessary data and information from field surveys, interviews, discussions, communications, consultations and interactions, those were classified, edited and coded. For analyzing the data, a combination of tabular and mathematical techniques were used to achieve the objectives and to get the meaningful results. Mainly graphical representation and descriptive analyses such as sum, average and percentages were derived and calculated to present the results.

Achievement/Findings:

The responsibility for development of livestock resources in Bangladesh is vested in the government, non-government organizations (NGOs), and the private sector. The government of Bangladesh is committed to take necessary steps to improve livestock productivity and achieve self sufficiency in milk and egg production with a view to meet the protein demand of the nation. For the development of livestock sector, the following activities have been undertaken - Production and distribution of vaccine for poultry and other animals, - Supply of ducklings and chicks in a cheaper price, and - Artificial insemination extension programme. Thus, if measures could be taken, livestock rearing would be a viable sector to overcome the problems of malnutrition unemployment and low income of the country.
