Design a Suitable Pump for Lifting Ground Water Using Animal Power

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One pump was designed for lifting ground water using animal power. The discharge was 50 gallons per min which is too low considering the investment. Preliminary tests showed some draw backs and proposed some modifications. It was decided to redesign the power transmission system completely. In the new system there would be a large drive wheel (star like) having teeth around its circumference to drive wheel having much smaller diameter and having teeth around its circumference also. These two wheels will be arranged in such a way that while drive wheel is operated by the animal, the rotation of the small wheel would be function of the rotation of big drive wheel. The proposed drive system is expected to eliminate the trouble of rail slippage. The fabrication of the new system has been under taken during the present programme period.

Objectives:

Methodology:

To reduce dependence on imported and capital intensive power operated pumps and to better utilize local resources an animal drawn pump has been designed. This pump will be operated by animal (s) moving around a circular path. The positive displacement pumping unit would deliver water by reciprocating movement of the pistons. Six cylinders (20 cm dia) have been radially arranged with a common suction. The pistons are moved inside the cylinders by a tilt wheel. One rotation of the wheel completes a working stroke of each cylinder and has displacement of 15 cm. The pump was fabricated during the Boro season of 1983. After preliminary tests pistons were modified for better performance. With the improved pistons several tests were conducted during Aus and aman seasons of 1983.

Achievement/Findings:

During the tests, sprocket wheel was not appropriate for this type of pumping unit because the driven wheel is much bigger than drive wheel and power could not be effectively transmitted. Then a gear system was adapted. Again it was found that the roller bearings of the piston lift arms came out of their guide rails within a few minutes of operation and the power requirements become very high due to bridging of the rollers against the drive wheel. At simulated animal speed, the discharge was 50 gallons (imp)/min which is too low considering the investment. From the experiences of the previous developments it was decided to redesign the power transmission system completely.
