Impact and Adoption Assessment of Power Tiller (pt) in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The power tiller adoption study revealed that there are 1,23,867 PTs available in the country in 2003. About 98% farmers used PT for tillage operations. Larger farmers (medium and large) are the early adopters compared to smaller farmers. PT adoption had multidimensional impact on crop sector. It increased total production by increasing productivity and cropping intensity. It generates high margin by reducing cost and increasing farmers technical efficiency.On an average,about 85 hectare of land was ploughed by a PT over the year with more coverage in Ravi and late Kharif season.Power tiller owner earned 52% of total income as net benefit. They can easily recover their purchased value within 2 years of operation. The constraints faced by PT owners are lack of knowledge about PT maintenance, low quality spare parts and fuel in the market and lack of institutional intervention to control the input quality and technical support to improve the use PT technology.

Objectives:

To document the extent of diffusion of PTs and characterize the farmers who adopt the PT To quantify input use (especially labor) and productivity changes at farm-level To estimate production efficiency and profitability of rice-wheat system To discuss PT adoption implications on livelihoods of rice-wheat farmers and elicit views on lime prospects of the technology

Methodology:

Selection of area and sample: Multi-stage sampling techniques were adapted to select area and sample. At the first stage of sampling, all agricultural blocks were used as primary source information on per tiller PT) diffusion in Bangladesh. Director General of DAE was requested to provide the help of all Block Supervisors (I3Ss) for gathering information on PT. At the second stage of sampling eight districts namely Brahmanbaria, Faridpur, Jessore, Chuadanga, Rajsahi, Dinajpur, were purposively selected. At the third stage , two upazila from each district was selected on the basis of more developed less developed. At the fourth stage two villages was selected from each upazila where rice -wheat area has got the priority. At the fifth stage , 10 farmers from each village was selected at random and total sample size for PT adoption was 320 .For PT adoption impact assessment particularly on crops and cropping intensity, productivity and profitability of 96 samples out of 320 samples were selected at random. To make a total 96 samples , 6 were selected from a list of 10 samples of each village that had rice-wheat cropping. A total of 32 PT owners were interviewed using a set of interview schedule. Four sets of interview schedule were designed and finalized after pretested to collect necessary information. Necessary data were collected by the agricultural economists through face to face interview method except PT diffusion data which collected by BSS. Both descriptive and appropriate inferential statistical tools were used to analyze the data and presented in both tabular and graphical forms.
