Economics of Foliar Applied Boron in Cotton Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field trials were carried out in 2004-2005 to evaluate the response of cotton to foliar-application of boron at three research farms of Cotton Development Board located at Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur. Three levels of boron viz. 0.02%, 0.03% and 0.04% and 3 number of spray viz. 2, 3 and 4 were applied from first square at 15 days interval. At all locations, the highest seed cotton yield and the highest economic return was obtained from 3 spray of 0.03% boron.

Objectives:

This study was undertaken to determine the economic impact of foliar-application of Boron solution in cotton yield.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted in 2004-2005 growing period at three research farms of Cotton Development Board located in Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur to evaluate the economic impact of foliar application of boron at different concentrations with different spray numbers on cotton variety CB-9. The treatments were: 1. 2 spray of 0.02% boron 2. 3 spray of 0.02% boron 3. 4 spray of 0.02% boron 4. 2 spray of 0.03% boron 5. 3 spray of 0.03% boron 6. 4 spray of 0.03% boron 7. 2 spray of 0.04% boron 8. 3 spray of 0.04% boron 9. 4 spray of 0.04% boron The treatments were allocated in plots following RCBD with 4 replications. Cotton variety CB-9 was used as test materials. The unit plot size was 10m × 10m and the plant spacing was 90 cm × 60 cm. Two or three seeds were sowing per hill. Though, after final thinning one seedling per hill was allowed to grow. Intercultural operations such as weeding, thinning, gap-filling, earthling-up, irrigation, insects and pest management were done in all plots uniformly. Cotton yield contributing characters such as plant height, number of vegetative and fruiting branches/plant, number of effective boll/plant, single boll weight were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants and seed cotton yield was recorded from each plot. Statistical analysis was done by MSTAT.

Achievement/Findings:

The three farms average gross return 52950.00, 58250.00, 64625.00, 57375.00, 67500.00, 60200.00, 57700.00, 56800.00 and 53000.00 Taka were obtained from 2 spray of 0.02% boron, 3 spray of 0.02% boron, 4 spray of 0.02% boron, 2 spray of 0.03% boron, 3 spray of 0.03% boron, 4 spray of 0.03% boron, 2 spray of 0.04% boron, 3 spray of 0.04% boron and 4 spray of 0.04% boron respectively.
