Reproductive Physiology Study of Rohu (labeo Rohita)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study the reproductive physiology of BFRI improved rohu under different feeding and management practices. The treatment were T₁- normal management with feeding 20% protein @1-2% body weight, no water exchange or flash and no prematuration hormone doses and T₂- improve management with feeding 30% protein @3-5% body weight, 4-5 days water flashing in a week and pre maturation hormone doses. BFRI improved rohu fingerlings of 3 month age (13-15 cm) were stocked @5000 fingerlings/ha. Significant higher growth (SGR 14%) of BFRI improved rohu have been found in improved management.

Objectives:

To study the effects of seasonal changes (environmental factors, feedings) in gonad development of rohu; to study the gonad histology of rohu; and to identify the suitable levels of feed management, environmental aspects improvement & hormone induction for pre-maturation of rohu.

Methodology:

Fingerlings of Rohu (L. rohita) more or less same age (3 months) and size (10-12 cm) were stocked under carp polyculture system. Feeding, fertilization and water management were monitored properly. Growth parameters were estimated monthly. The experimental design and management protocol was monthly estimates of standard length and weight for growth determination and gonad weight for Gonado Somatic Index (GSI) study was recorded. Ovarian and testicular samples were collected every month (from 8 months of age) and gonadal histological study was made by using recognized methods. Blood sample was collected for determination of steroids (17 ß-oestradiol & testosterone) levels and serum calcium using recognized procedures.

Achievement/Findings:

Endemic and exotic species of carps are of significant importance to aquaculture in Bangladesh. Are there any possibilities for early breeding of Rohu in February-March? To get early breeding, firstly, it is a need to study the Reproductive Physiology to know correctly the maturation stages of gonads and environmental factors affecting natural spawning cycle. Once reproductive physiology parameters are known, then an attempt to be made for early breeding by proper feeding, controlling environmental aspects & hormone induction for pre-maturation.
