Preliminary Yield Trial of Upland Cotton (gossypium, Hirsutum L)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of eight cotton genotypes along with a control variety CB -12 were evaluated at 3 farms of Cotton Development Board viz. Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur in 2012-13 growing period for seed cotton yield and yield contributing characters. The interaction effect of treatment × location was found significant for fruiting branch/plant, single boll weight and seed cotton yield. The main effect of treatment and location were found significant for vegetative branch/plant, plant height at harvest and boll number/plant. The highest seed cotton yield 3019 kg/ha (Sreepur farm), 3019 kg/ha (Sadarpur farm) and 2396 kg/ha (Jagadishpur farm) were obtained from the genotypes, BC-063, JA-08/A and BC-027 respectively. The result suggested that further selection should be focused on location specific development of high yielding genotypes.

Objectives:

To find out the high yielding genotypes from 8 accessions of cotton germplasm .

Methodology:

The trial was conducted at 3 (three) Cotton Research Farm, located in Gazipur, Dinajpur and Jessore during 2012-13. In this experiment, the performance of eight genotypes viz. BC-0405, BC-063, JA-08/9, JA-08/A, BC-027, BC-047, JA/08/D1, Ja-10/J were evaluated against control variety CB-12. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 (three) replications. Unit plot size was 5m x 3.6m and plant spacing was 90 cm x 45 cm. Data were collected from middle two rows (5m x 1.8m) of each plot to minimize border effects. Two or three seeds were sowing per hill. Though, after final thinning one seedling per hill was allowed to grow. Intercultural operations such as weeding, thinning, gap-filling, earthling-up, irrigation, insects and pest management were done in all plots uniformly. Cotton yield contributing characters such as plant height, number of vegetative and fruiting branches per plant, number of effective boll per plant, single boll weight were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants and seed cotton yield was recorded from each plot. Statistical analysis was done by Cropstat (2007).

Achievement/Findings:

The genotype JA-08/C had the significantly lowest number of vegetative branch (1.3) per plant while the number of vegetative branch per plant in all other genotypes were statistically similar. The significantly highest plant height (138.7cm ) was found in BC-063 and the lowest plant height (106.9cm) was observed in Ja-10/J. The highest number of boll per plant (32.5) was found in BC-063 and the lowest number of boll per plant (26.6) was found in JA-10/J. The highest number of fruiting branches/plant was found at BC-047 (18.9), BC-063 (41.0) and BC-063 (32.5) in Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur farm respectively. The lowest fruiting branch/plant 17.2 was obtained from JA-08/A in Sreepur farm and 23.9 at Sadarpur and 27.1 at Jagadishpur farm from JA-10/J genotype. The highest single boll weight 5.83g was obtained from JA-08/9 at Sreepur farm, and 6.07g at Sadarpur farm and 5,90g at Jagadishpur farm from JA-10/J genotype. The seed cotton yield ranges between 2056 to 3019, 1759 to 3019 and 2096 to 2396 kg/ha at Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur farm respectively. The genotypes, BC-063, JA-08/A and BC-027 were produced the highest seed cotton yield at Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur Farm respectively.
