Impact of Jamuna Bridge on Rice Price Spread and Input Pricing Behaviour

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Price of output in the Northern region showed increasing trend after the establishment of Jamuna Bridge resulting declining trend at the price spread. Due to the improvement in infrastructure, producers' share of the consumers' payment also increased. Since the establishment cost of DTW was substantially higher in Satkhira, the cost of irrigation was also much higher in that region. Boro growing farmers at Satkhira applied urea at the sub-optimal level because of inadequate supply and artificial crisis. High price of fertilizer was another factor for lower application by the resource poor farmers of Satkhira.

Objectives:

To examine the changes in farm-retail price spread in the northern districts in two periods (before and after the establishment of Jamuna Bridge);
To assess the difference in input utilization and pricing behavior in northern and coastal areas, in order to compare the situation after establishment of Jamuna Bridge; and
To suggest some policy measures in improving the situation based on the research findings.

Methodology:

Both primary and secondary data were used for this study; (i) in order to examine the price spread, mainly secondary data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and Directorate of Agril. Marketing (DAM) were used, and (ii) primary data were generated through carrying out sample survey in two areas of the country (i.e. two northern districts and one coastal district). Collected data were analyzed using simple statistical technique and presented in tabular form
