Maize Suitable Areas in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to spatially identify the potential areas suitable for Maize cultivation. Maize suitability was made based on soil physical parameters Land type, top soil texture Permeability, Slope, Drainage, Salinity, Soil pH and Soil consistency. To construct the suitability surfaces/maps, ArcView Spatial Analyst interpolation tools with inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) model were used. The most favorable environment for growing maize is located in the greater Dinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra, Rashahi, Kushtia, Jessore & Satkhira districts. There are some pocket areas in Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Gazipur, Comilla and hill tracts in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To spatially identify the potential areas suitable for Maize cultivation.

Methodology:

Maize suitability was made based on soil physical parameters Land type, top soil texture Permeability, Slope, Drainage, Salinity, Soil pH and Soil consistency. The soil parameter values were scaled following Thana Nirdeshika of SRDI, consultation with the experts. Thana level Maize yield data of DAE (2001-03) and Multi-location test result of Maize, CIMMYT Bangladesh (2003). These were weighed according to their importance in relation to maize cultivation under irrigated under environment. Secondary information and expert’s opinion were also considered in determining the weights. To construct the suitability surfaces/maps, ArcView Spatial Analyst interpolation tools with inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) model were used. Zestj = S[ zi/(hij + s)? p]/ S[1 /(hij + s)? p] For each of the eight physical parameters individual grid theme were constructed to use as input themes of the suitability model. These eight map layers were overlaid and a combined maize suitability map was obtained.

Achievement/Findings:

The most favorable environment for growing maize is located in the greater Dinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra, Rashahi, Kushtia, Jessore & Satkhira districts. There are some pocket areas in Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Gazipur, Comilla, and hill tracts area in Bangladesh. The map produced is a provisional one that needs to be fine turned including additional information, performance T. Aman varieties in different locations of Bangladesh and other biotic and abotic factor contributing positively or negatively to maize yield.
