Standardization of the Breeding Technique and Development of Culture Technique of Bheda (nandua Nandus)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In treatment-1 meni (N. nandas) fry fed with zooplankton showed significantly (p>0.05) higher mean weight then the fry fed with Artimia, Tubifex and commercial nursery feed. Mean survival in treatment 1, 2, 3 & 4 were 55%, 47%, 50% and 42% respectively. After 45 days trial it was observed that the means final length, weight and survival rate of fingerling of N. nandus under T₁(80nos/m²) were higher compared to those of T₂ and T₃.

Objectives:

Brood development of N. nandus under different stocking densities; standardization of breeding technique of N. nandus under different hormone treatments; development of nursing technique of N. nandus under different conditions; and development of culture technique of N. nandus.

Methodology:

To investigate the competency about growth performances of meni (N. nandas) 8 mini cisterns (9ft/6ft) were stocked @ 1000/qm used for 20 days, where zooplankton, Artimia, Tubifex and commercial nursery feed as feed for spawn (length 5.02 mm and weight 4.13 ± 0.31mg). There were four treatments such as T₁. zooplankton T₂. Artimia, T₃. Tubifex and T₄. commercial nursery feed. Another experiment was conducted in earthen nursery ponds for a period of 45 days. 20 days old fry were reared in nursery ponds at three different stocking densities. Each nursery pond were roofed and encircled with fine mesh nylon net. The fry were fed with fine rice bran (25%), mustered oil cake (25%) and fish meal (50%), along with formulated feed @ 6%-12% of body weight.

Achievement/Findings:

Appropriate stocking densities for brood development as well as comparative breeding performance between collected adult and reared sub-adult of endangered fish N. nandus was developed and breeding technique of N. nandus was standardized. Moreover, culture technique of N. nandus was developed which will helpful in its conservation.
