Study on Growth and Production Performances of Improved Fish Species in the Seasonal and Perennial Ponds in Nilphamari Region.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A 120 days experiment was carried out with replication on the cultural trials of BFRI GIFT (Oreochromis sp.), Silver barb (Barbodes gonionotus) and Magur (Clarias batrachus) in the seasonal ponds in Saidpur region. The initial weight of the GIFT, Silver barb and Magur were 5.7g, 7.48 g and 1.03 g species, respectively. The stocking density was 45,000/ha in each Treatments with combination of GIFT: Siver barb: Magur at ratio 1:1:1 in T₁, in T₂ Siver barb: Magur at ration 1:1 and in T3, GIFT: Magur at ration 1:1. After 120 days of culture (DOC), among the species higher growth was observed in GIFT. In the present study, apparently higher total production was recorded in T₃ (Magur and GIFT were stocked at 1:1 ratio). However, the net profit and benefit cost ratio (BCR) was higher in treatment T3 which is due to weight gain of GIFT in this treatment. The survival rate was recorded for each treatment for silver barb ((T₁: 82% and T₂: 85%) was higher than GIFT ((T₁: 80% and T₃: 78%) and Magur (T_1: 62%, T₂: 65% and T_3: 58%).

Objectives:

To improve of cultural technique of selective species in the seasonal/ perennial ponds; assessment of growth and production per unit areas; assessment of suitability of water quality in the cultural water bodies; and to compare the profitability of the species culture in the seasonal/ perennial ponds.

Methodology:

The experiment on the culture trials on BFRI GIFT (Oreochromis sp.), Silver barb (Barbodes gonionotus) and Magur (Clarias batrachus) in the seasonal ponds in Saidpur region was undertaken. The ponds two of FSS and six from the farmers with an area range 0.03-0.06 ha were prepared by application of lime (CaO) @ 125 kg/ha, followed by cow dung 500 kg/ha; filled with ground water and applied urea @ 50 kg/ha and TSP 25 kg/ha. GIFT, Silver barb and Magur fingerlings of 5.7g, 7.48 g and 1.03 g, respectively were stocked @ 45,000/ha with combination Treatment T₁ for GIFT: Silver barb: Maguri at ratio 1:1:1, in T₂, Silver barb: Magur at ration 1:1, in T3, GIFT: Magur at ration 1:1. The fish were fed rice barn (39.9%), fishmeal (25%), mustard oil cake (20%), wheat bran (9%), wheat flour (6%) and vitamin premixes (0.1%) at 10-3% of gradually decreased by fortnightly of estimated crop, twice daily. Water quality was monitored in every week, while growth of the fish was monitored at every fortnight.

Achievement/Findings:

From the experiment it can be mentioned that the polyculture practices of magur with short cycle fish species might be expanded ensuring the reducing of mortality (due to escaping) by following such an management practices and also ensuring the availability of its fry. Thus, the polyculture of Magur, GIFT and Thai punti could be possible in seasonal pond potentially in northern region.
