Advanced Yield Trial of Upland Cotton (gossypium Hirsutum L)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of six genotypes on seed cotton yield and yield contributing characters were evaluated in 3 locations together with control variety CB -12 in 2012-13 growing period. The interaction effect of genotype × location was found significant for vegetative branch/plant and fruiting branch/plant. The main effect of treatment and location were found significant for plant height at harvest, boll/plant and seed cotton yield. The highest seed cotton yield (2982 kg/ha) was obtained from CB-12 followed by JA/08/F (2959 kg/ha) and all other genotypes had lower yield than the control. The association study revealed that vegetative parts i.e. vegetative branch/plant and fruiting branch/plant had more contribution in seed cotton yield than the fruiting parts i.e. boll number/plant and single boll weight in the studied genotypes. The high value of the heritability estimates were observed for vegetative branch, fruiting branch, plant height, boll number and seed cotton yield.

Objectives:

These genotypes were tested through progeny row trial and preliminary yield trial in the preceding years. As a final step of that work the performance of BC-0165, JA/08/F, JA-054, BC-051, JA/08/D and JA/08/B were tested with the existing cultivar (CB-12) in multi-location to short out the better genotype.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at three Cotton Research Farms of Cotton Development Board located at Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur during the year 2012-13. Six advanced lines encoded BC-0165, JA/08/F, JA-054, BC-051, JA/08/D and JA/08/B were included in this experiment. CB-12 was used as control. The experiment covered the time from last week of July- 2012 to last week of February - 2013. The trial was established randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 4 replications. The unit plot size was 5 m X 3.6 m. The plant spacing was 0.90m between the lines and 0.45m between the plants. All other management practices were farm standard. Data on vegetative branches/plant, main stem node number of first fruiting branch, primary fruiting branches per plant, secondary fruiting branches per plant, days to first flowering, days to first boll split, plant height at harvest, number of bolls per plant, single boll weight, yield per plot were recorded. In all cases data were collected from ten randomized selected plants of middle two rows of each plot to avoid boarder effect. Mean data was used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The interaction effect of genotype × location was found significant for vegetative branch/plant and fruiting branch/plant. The main effect of treatment and location were found significant for plant height at harvest, boll/plant and seed cotton yield. The lowest plant height (110.1cm ) at harvest was found in control variety CB-12 and the highest plant height (135.7cm) in BC-0165 genotype. The genotype JA/08/B had the lowest boll/plant (27.8) and the highest boll/plant (33.2) was found in both BC-051 and JA/08/D genotypes. The highest seed cotton yield (2982 kg/ha) was obtained from CB-12 followed by JA/08/F (2959 kg/ha), all other genotypes had lower yield than the control. Within the three farms, mean plant height at harvest (113.7 cm) and seed cotton yield (2417 kg/ha) were the lowest at Jagadishpur farm although the highest number of boll/plant (37.4) was obtained from there. The plant height at harvest (126.5cm) and seed cotton yield (3181 kg/ha) and the lowest boll/plant (24.4) were recorded at Sadarpur farm. The results revealed that the highest proximity between the estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation was observed for number of vegetative branch (20.40 and 21.51 respectively) that gave the highest value for heritability estimates (0.90). Followed by fruiting branch, plant height, seed cotton yield and number of boll of which the heritability estimates were 0.86, 0.84, 0.80, 0.74 respectively. Besides, the heritability estimate was zero for boll weight.
