Performance of Introduced Cotton Hybrid at Modhupur Tract in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Cotton Research Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur during 2012-13 to evaluate the performance of eight introduced cotton hybrid genotypes. The genotypes did not differ significantly in seed cotton yield and yield contributing characters. Seed cotton yield had significant positive correlation with number of fruiting branch and number of boll and non-significant but positive correlation with vegetative branch, plant height and boll weight. The regression equation showed that the boll number per plant and the boll weight were the main factors affecting the seed cotton yield.

Objectives:

To assess the performance of introduced cotton hybrid varieties over local varieties and to select the best performed hybrids among the introduced cotton hybrid varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Cotton Research Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur during the season 2012-13. Eight introduced hybrid genotypes were included in the experiment viz. YC-2, Yc-4, Siddique-4, Siddique-5, Siddique-6, Siddique-7, HSC-4 and DM-2.. The trial was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4.5m×3.6m and plant spacing was 0.90m×0.45m. Data on vegetative branches/plant, main stem node number of first fruiting branch, primary fruiting branches per plant, secondary fruiting branches per plant, days to first flowering, days to first boll split, plant height at harvest, number of bolls per plant, single boll weight, yield per plot were recorded. In all cases data were collected from ten randomized selected plants of middle two rows of each plot to avoid boarder effect. Mean data was used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The vegetative branch/plant did not differ significantly from genotype to genotype that ranges between 0.5 to 1.0. The fruiting branch/plant did not differ significantly among the treatments. The highest number of fruiting branch (22.5) was found in YC-4 genotype and the lowest number of fruiting branch (19.3) was recorded in DM-2. The recorded plant height range between 124.1cm to 190.8cm that did not differ significantly. The highest number of boll/plant (44.8) was recorded in genotype YC-4 and the lowest number of boll plant-1 was recorded 25.9 in genotype DM-2. The highest single boll weight (5.83 g) was found in genotype HSC-4 and the lowest in YC-4 (4.87g). Likewise yield contributing characters, the seed cotton yield did not differ significantly among the genotypes. The genotype HSC-4 produced the highest seed cotton yield (3324 kg/ha) and the genotype DM-2 produced the lowest seed cotton yield (2917 kg/ha).
