Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objectives of this study was to maintain up-to date information on rice and related crops and inputs and to provide rice and rice related information to other research divisions and interested persons. A survey study was conducted for this study. Primary and secondary data were used for this study. Thirteen of the 21 old districts were deficit in cereal food in 1990-91 that reduced to 10 in 2000-01 and 6 in 2003-04. There are still six food deficit districts: Barisal, Chittagong H.T. Chittagong, Dhaka, Faridpur, Khulna, Kushtia that need special attention from research and development for identifying the constraints and designing appropriate policy options.

Achievement/Findings:

Out of 21 old greater districts thirteen suffered deficit in cereal food production during 1990-91. These districts were Bandarban, Pabna, Barisal, Chittagong H.T., Commila, Dhaka, Faridpur, Khulna, Kushtia, Noakhali, Sylhet, & Tangail. Three (Chittagong, Sylhet, & Tangail) of these thirteen districts recovered cereal food deficit during 2000-01 and another four districts (Commila, Khulna, Pabna, Noakhali) recovered this deficit during 2003-04. Dhaka, Faridpur, Bandarban, Barisal, Chittagong H.T.and kushtia still remains deficit in food production during 2003-04. Thus, thirteen of the 21 old districts were deficit in food production during 1990-91 that reduced to 10 in 2000-01 and 6 in 2003-04. Bogra, Dinajpur,Jamalpur, Jessore, Mymensingh, Patuakhali, Rajshahi & Rangpur districts remained surplus in cereal food production over all the three studied years.
