Up Date Study on Cost and Return of Jute Seed Production at Farm Level in Different Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In olitorius jute seed, based on the survey results, it was found that the average total cost (TC) of all the location was amounted to Tk. 95,383( Tk.Ninty five thousand three hundred eighty three only) per hectare. The average cash cost per hectare was, about 55% of total cost, amounting to Tk. 52,452( Tk.Fifty two thousand four hundred fifty two ) at farm level. The total cost per hectare was found highest in Chapai-Nawabganj Tk.1,01,267 ( Tk. One lac one thousand two hundred sixty seven ) compared to other location. The average benefit cost ratio (BCR) both full cost basis (1.05) and cash cost basis (1.91) were positive. In Capsularis jute seed production at farm level, it was found that the average total cost (TC) of all the location was amounted to Tk. 90,775 per hectare. The average cash cost per hectare was about 55% of total cost, amount to Tk. 49,730 at farm level. The total cost per hectare was found highest in Tangail (Tk. 53,313) compared to other location. It appears that per hectare average yield of seed, fibre and stick was 629 kg/ha, 1311 /kg and 2611 kg/ha respectively. The observed variation in yield across the locations was due to different types of management practices, lack of balanced fertilization and sensitivity to weather etc.

Objectives:

i) To estimate the cost and return for late jute seed crop production

ii) To identify the socioeconomic constraints of late jute seed crop production.

Methodology:

Structured questionnaire survey was conducted during 2013 jute seed growing season for collecting the associated data on production activity. The survey was conducted at four locations where white jute seed (Tangail & Manikganj) and tossa jute seed (Rajshahi & Jessore) was grown intensively. A total sample of 160 farmers (40 farmers from each location) was selected randomly. Tabular method was used for analyzing the data. Co-ordination from the respective scientists at research stations of BJRI, concerned personnel from DAE, BADC and Jute Directorate were e included in need for data collection during the study.Location-wise cost of olitorius and capsularis jute seed cultivation per hectare was culculated. Cost of production was the main determining factor for farm income.Return was measured in terms of yield, gross return and net return. Gross return was the value of jute seed yield, fibre yield and by product. On the other hand, net return was the difference between gross return and cost of production (TC). The average value of jute seed, jute fibre and jute stick yield was calculated at prevailing market rate and it was Tk.110.00/kg for jute seed, Tk. 25.00/kg for jute fibre and Tk. 3.50/kg for jute stick.

Achievement/Findings:

The total cost per hectare was found highest in Chapai-Nawabganj (Tk.1,01,267) compared to other location. It appears that both average gross return and margin per hectare were Tk 1,00,367/ha and Tk. 4,984/ha on the basis of full cost basis, whereas in cash cost basis gross margin per hectare were Tk. 47,915/ha over the locations. From the cost and return analysis of jute seed production at farm level, it was observed that seed production is marginal profitable during 2012. The average benefit cost ratio (BCR) both full cost basis (1.05) and cash cost basis (1.91) were positive. In Capsularis jute seed production at farm level, the average cash cost per hectare was about 55% of total cost, amount to Tk. 49,730 at farm level. The total cost per hectare was found highest in Tangail (Tk. 53,313) compared to other location. This was due to higher wages of human labour at that location. It appears that both average gross return and gross margin per hectare were Tk.94827/ha and Tk. 4,052/ha on full cost basis, whereas in cash cost basis gross margin per hectare was Tk. 45,097/ha over the locations. The highest gross return and gross margin were observed 105301 Tk/ha and 7542 Tk/ha in Tangail on the basis of full cost. The average benefit cost ratio (BCR) were positive both on full cost basis (1.04) and cash cost basis (1.91).
