Effect of Sowing Date on Fibre Yield and Yield Attributes of Advanced Breeding Line O-3820 of Tossa Jute.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at BJRI Research Stations of Manikganj, Rangpur, Faridpur and Jessore in 2012 to determine the optimum sowing date of tossa jute breeding line O-3820. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Recommended cultivar BJRI Tossa Pat-4 (O-72) was used as control. Seeds were sown on three different dates like 20 March, 30 March and 10 April regarded as treatments. Results revealed that advanced breeding line O-3820 yielded significantly higher fibre than control at Manikganj (3.69 t/ha), Rangpur (2.66 t/ha) and Jessore (2.48 t/ha). BJRI Tossa Pat-4 was better at Faridpur (3.82 t/ha). It also noted that maximum yields were recorded at Manikganj (3.73 t/ha) sown on 20 March and Rangpur (3.10 t/ha), Faridpur (3.95 t/ha) and Jessore (2.79 t/ha) sown on 30 March. All other yield parameters also gave the highest results according to the yields. The crop sown on 10 April recorded the lowest fibre yield.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance and optimum date of sowing for higher fibre yield of tossa jute breeding line O-3820 at different locations of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BJRI research station of Manikganj, Rangpur, Faridpur and Jessore in 2012. The RCBD with three replications were followed. Unit plot size was 4.0m x 2.5m. Space between plot to plot and around the field was 1.0 m and between replications 1.5 m. Crop was sown in line of 30 cm apart on three different dates like 20 March, 30 March and 10 April regarded as treatments. Tossa jute breeding line O-3820 was used as study material and recommended cultivar BJRI Tossa Pat-4 (O-72) was used as control. Standard cultural and intercultural practices were followed. Crops were harvested at 120 days after sowing.
