Update Study on Cost and Return of Tossa Jute Production at Farm Level in Different Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Survey was carried out of selected 7 locations namely Jessore, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalgonj, Comilla, Notore and Rangpur districts where jute and allied fibre grows intensively during the jute season 2012. Based on the survey results, it was found that the average total cost (TC) of all the location per hectare was amounted to Tk. 80,463. The average cash cost per hectare was about 58% of total cost, amounting to Tk. 46,463 incase of olitorius jute production at farm level. The total cost per hectare was found the highest in Faridpur (Tk. 94,397) compared to other six locations. It appears that per hectare yield of fibre was 2840 kg/ha was the highest in Faridpur and lowest in Rangpur (2260 kg/ha). The average yield of Jute fibre was 2572 kg/ha and average Jute stick yield was 5441kg/ha. It appears that both average gross return and gross margin per hectare were Tk.18,529/ha and Tk. 52,529/ha on the basis of full cost & cash cost over the locations. The highest gross return was observed in Gopalgonj (121035 Tk/ha) and highest gross margin was recorded Tk 40107/ha in same location on the basis of full cost. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was highest in Gopalgonj 1.49 on the basis of full cost and 2.57 on the basis of cash cost. This may be attributed due to the advantages of higher market price of jute fibre and by-product yield and also lower production cost at Gopalgonj compared to Faridpur.

Objectives:

i) To estimate the cost and return of jute

ii) To identify the socioeconomic constraints for jute production.

iii) To estimate the area under jute, kenaf and mesta cultivation.

Methodology:

Structured questionnaire survey was conducted during 2012 jute growing season for collecting the associated data on production activity. The survey was conducted at seven locations where jute was grown intensively. A total sample of 280 farmers (30 farmers from each location) were selected randomly. Tabular method were used for analyzing the data. Co-ordination from the respective scientists at research stations of BJRI, concerned personnel from DAE and Jute Directorate were included in need for data collection during the study.

Achievement/Findings:

These entire factors ensure highest net return in this area.
