Rice Marketing: Varietal Renaming Scenario at Trading Stages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The volume and variety of paddy purchased by the millers varied to a great extent among different locations. In Boro season , BR16 found more popular and BR11 swarna and pajam found very popular varieties. In Boro season 25 percent of BRRI dhan28 and 10 percent of BRRI dhan29 were traded by renaming Minikit in different rice markets of Bangladesh. Similarly, 50% of Pajam was traded by renaming as Nizersail throughout the country. The traders earned Tic 55 and Tk 52 per 50 kg bag by changing the trade name of BRRI dhan28 and BRR1 dhan29 respectively in Boro season. In T. Aman season, the traders earn Tk 50/bag by renaming Pajam to Naizersail.

Objectives:

To assess the volume of paddy processed by the rice millers in each season;
To measure the extent of profit earned by the millers from different rice varieties; and
To find out the volume of paddy processed by the traders in different trade names and assess the level of traders profit in changing trade names.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the northern districts of Bangladesh namely Naogaon, Natore and Dinajpur which are treated as surplus paddy producing areas. Two categories of rice mills (i.e., auto and major rice mills) were taken under the study. In all 5 Auto rice mills and 15 major rice mills were selected randomly. Information were collected using pre-designed questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
