Evaluation of Introduced Cotton Hybrid

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of nine introduced hybrid genotypes were studied for seed cotton yield and yield contributing characters at three farms of Cotton Development Board viz. Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur in 2012-13 growing period. The seed cotton yield ranges between 3.43 t/ha to 2.94 t/ha that did not differ significantly. Results revealed that seed cotton yield had significant positive correlation with plant height and individual boll weight ; non-significant but negative correlation with vegetative branch, fruiting branch and boll number. The regression equation showed that the boll weight, boll number and the plant height should be considered as target traits for improvement of seed cotton yield. Genetic component analysis showed that the seed cotton yield had very low heritability.

Objectives:

The objectives of this study was to evaluate the performance of introduced cotton hybrid in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at three Cotton Research Farms of Cotton Development Board located at Sreepur, Sadarpur and Jagadishpur during the year 2012-13. Nine introduced hybrid genotypes viz. YC-1, YC-3, ZJ-1, ZJ-2, Siddique-1, Siddique-2, Siddique-3, DM-2 and HSC-4 were included in this experiment. The experiment covered the time from last week of July- 2012 to last week of February - 2013. The trial was established randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 5 m × 3.6 m. The plant spacing was 0.90m × 0.45m. All other management practices were uniform for all hybrid genotypes. Data on vegetative branches/plant, main stem node number of first fruiting branch, primary fruiting branches per plant, secondary fruiting branches per plant, days to first flowering, days to first boll split, plant height at harvest, number of bolls per plant, single boll weight, yield per plot were recorded. In all cases data were collected from ten randomized selected plants of middle two rows of each plot to avoid boarder effect. Mean data was used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The vegetative branch/plant ranges between 2.5 to 1.9 in used genotypes that did not differ significantly. The number of fruiting branch/plant was varied significantly in different genotypes. The highest number of fruiting branch/plant (40.3) was found in Siddique-3 and the lowest number of fruiting branch/plant (25.0) was found in YC-3. The plant height ranges between 1.57m (Siddique-3) to 1.09m (YC-1). Significant difference was observed for boll/plant and the highest number of boll/plant (38.1) was recorded from the genotype Siddique-3 and the lowest number of boll/plant (29.4) was recorded in YC-1. The single boll weight in different hybrid genotypes that ranges between 4.63g (YC-1) to 3.98g (Siddique-3). The seed cotton yield ranges between 3.43 t/ha (Siddique-1) to 2.94 t/ha ( YC-1 and HSC-4).
