Effect of Sowing Date on Yield and Harvesting Period of Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Influence of sowing dates commencing from 5 June to 20 July with 15 days interval, on seed cotton yield of CB-12, DM-2, Rupali-1and JA-08/D was studied during 2012-2013 at three Cotton Research Farms under the district of Jessore, Gazipur and Dinajpur. The differences in yield of seed cotton recorded each farm were highly significant. Results revealed that the highest seed cotton yield of 3271 kg/ha was obtained from Jagodishpur farm, Jessore on 5th June sowing using JA-08/D line which was statistically similar with other varieties planted in the same date and also obtained similar yield using CB-12, DM-2 and variety Rupai-1 planted on 20th June. It is suggested that for getting better seed cotton yield and picking earlier, cotton may be planted in the month of June at Jessore, late June to 1st week of July at Dinajpur. To get maximum yield cotton may be sown on 1st to 2rd week of July at Gazipur

Objectives:

The present study is designed to find out the optimum sowing date of cotton aimed to harvest seed cotton within December.

Methodology:

Field experiment was conducted during 2012-13 to determine the influence of sowing dates viz. S₁ (5th June), S₂ (20th June), S₃(5th July), S₄ (20th July), on the yield of four cotton cultivars viz. V1(CB-12), V2 (DM-2), V3 (Rupali-1) and V4 (JA-08/D) at three Cotton Research Farm of Cotton Development Board located at Jagodishpur, Jessore; Sadarpur, Dinajpur and Sreepur, Gazipur. The crop was sown well in time according to the schedule. The seeds of all the varieties were drilled in three replicated split plot design in net plot size of 3.6 × 4.5 meters. The distance between rows and plant to plant was 90 × 45 cm. All chemical fertilizers were applied as per recommendation dose. All the required cultural operations regarding irrigation, weeding and plant protection measures were adopted uniformly in all the plots throughout the growing periods in all locations. Data for the studied characters were analyzed as a factorial experiment arranged in a split plot design. A combined analysis of variance was conducted for the three locations. The Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% and 1% level of significance was used to examine differences among treatment means and the interactions, if significant, to determine the optimum factorial combination of sowing date and variety.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest seed cotton yield was obtained on 5th June sowing using the variety CB-12, DM-2, Rupali-1 and JA-08/D at Jagodishpur farm, Jessore. Yield was highest in second sowing at Sadarpur farm, Dinajpur and in 3rd and 4th sowing it was highest at Sreepur farm, Gazipur. About 97% seed cotton was harvested within 180 days (5th December) and 100% was harvested within 189 days (9th December) when seeded on 5th June at Jagodishpur farm, Jessore and at Sadarpur farm, Dinajpur accordingly. When seed was planted on 20th June about 95% to 98% seed cotton was harvested within 196 days (5th January) for all the locations. In 3rd sowing (5th July) and 4th sowing (20th July ) cotton was harvested within 1st February at Jagodishpur farm, Jessore and at Sadarpur farm, Dinajpur but it was late 10 days at Sreepur, Gazipur.
