Survey of Cotton Diseases

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Cotton yields are generally low in Bangladesh. Cotton diseases contribute to some extent to these low yields. Field survey was done in 2012- 2013 growing period at Sreepur farm to know the status of leaf spot and boll rot diseases on advanced yield trial and preliminary yield trial genotypes. The results revealed that per cent of leaf spot and boll rot disease incidence were varied from genotype to genotype. Thus, in selecting high yielding genotypes, the disease index need to be considered.

Objectives:

The objective of this work was to determine the status of cotton diseases at Sreepur farm, with reference to percent of disease incidence, disease severity and disease index.

Methodology:

Field survey was done in 2012- 2013 growing period at Sreepur farm to know the status of leaf spot and boll rot diseases on advanced yield trial and preliminary yield trial genotypes. Data were taken from 10 randomly selected plants at each plot. Per cent of disease incidence (PDI) was calculated as follows: PDI = (Number of plants affected)/(Total number of plants observed) ×100 Leaf spot disease rating was done according to Raj (1988) that was as follows: 0 Immune, completely free from foliar diseases 1 Highly resistant, infection of 0-10% 2 Moderately resistant, infection of 11-20% 3 Moderately susceptible, infection of 21-40% 4 Highly susceptible, infection more than 40% Leaf spot disease severity (DS) was estimated according to Kheiri and Fatahi, (2010) that was as follows: Disease severity (DS) = (A x 0 + B x 1 + C x 2 + D x 3 + E x 4)/M where, A= Number of plant with 0 Score B= Number of Plant with 1 score C= Number of plant with 2 score D= Number of Plant with 3 score E= Number of plant with 4 score M= Total number of plant Leaf spot disease index was estimated according to the formula proposed by Kheiri and Fatahi, (2010) that was given below: Disease Index (DI) = Per cent of disease incidence (PDI) × Disease severity (DS). While the boll rot disease index was calculated as follows: Disease Index (DI) = (Number of diseased bolls)/(Total number of healthy bolls) × 100.

Achievement/Findings:

The lowest disease incidence was observed in control variety CB-12. In all other genotypes leaf sport range was 60 to 80 and the boll rot range was 20 to 80. The highest disease severity (2) was found in genotype BC-0165 while the lowest disease severity (0.2) was recorded in CB-12. The highest value of leaf spot disease index (160) was obtained from genotype BC-0165 while the lowest disease index value 4.0 was found in control variety CB-12. The lowest boll rot index(0.6) was observed in control variety CB-12 while the highest boll rot index (2.80) was recorded in genotype JA-054. In case of PYT lines, the highest boll rot index (2.83) was found in JA/08/D genotype and the lowest boll rot index (0.69) was observed in BC-027.
