Screening of White Jute Accessions Through Anatomical Studies for Higher Fibre Content-2005

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Under this experiment forty-nine accessions of white jute and a check variety CVL-1 were grown at Manikganj with 3.0m long row for each treatment. These accession were studied based on anatomical characters like bark thickness, No. of phloem pyramid (trapezoid), No. of layer, No. of fibre bundle and area of phloem pyramid. All the characters showed significant differences among the treatments. Accessions number 1944 and 1951 performed significant result than the check variety CVL-1 for bark thickness, No. of pyramids, No. of layer and area of pyramid, accession No. 1901, 1914 and 1935 for bark thickness, No. of fibre bundle and area of pyramid and accession number 1923 for bark thickness, No. of layer and area of pyramid. So, accessions No. of 1901, 1914, 1923, 1935, 1944 and 1951 able to attain more fibre content than the check variety CVL-1.

Objectives:

To isolate higher fibre bearing potentiality genotypes through anatomical studies.

Methodology:

For studying anatomical characters 3 inches long segments was cut from the middle parts of each of the selected plant at the age of 110 days. These materials were preserved in Formalin- Aceto- Alcohol (FAA) solution (10 ml of Formalin, 5ml of 85% glacial acetic acid and 85 ml of 70% alcohol). Bark diameter, Bark thickness,Number of trapezoids/section, Area of trapezoid/section (μm), Number of layers/ trapezoid, Number of bundles/trapezoid , Length, breadth and length: breadth ratio were calculated for three plants of each accession under microscope.
