Screening of White Jute Accession Through Anatomical Studies for Higher Fibre Content-2003

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Under this experiment, fibre bearing potentiality of 34 genotypes of white jute along with cultivar CC-45 as check variety as assessed through studies of anatomical characters such bark thickness, number of phloem pyramid, area of phloem pyramid and number of fibre bundles layer or arc. Significant differences among the genotypes were observed in all the characters studied. We know that bark thickness and are of phloem pyramids were directly and positively correlated with fibre yield. Accession number 952 gave higher bark thickness with higher area of the pyramids than the check variety CC-45 indicating higher fibre bearing potentiality.

Objectives:

To isolate higher fibre bearing potentiality genotypes through anatomical studies.

Methodology:

For studying anatomical characters 3 inches long segments was cut from the middle parts of each of the selected plant at the age of 110 days. These materials were preserved in Formalin- Aceto- Alcohol (FAA) solution (10 ml of Formalin, 5ml of 85% glacial acetic acid and 85 ml of 70% alcohol). Bark diameter, Bark thickness,Number of trapezoids/section, Area of trapezoid/section (μm), Number of layers/ trapezoid, Number of bundles/trapezoid , Length, breadth and length: breadth ratio were calculated for three plants of each accession under microscope. So, we can easily isolate higher fibre bearing potentiality genotypes through anatomical studies i.e. fibre compactness per unit area of plant bast.
