Path Coefficient Analysis for Fibre Yield Related Traits in Deshi Jute (corchorus Capsularis L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eleven genotypes of deshi jute were grown in Agricultural Experiment Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Manikganj, Bangladesh during April to August 2008 to study the genotypic and phenotypic variances, correlation and path coefficient for plant height, base diameter, green weight, stick weight, number of pod per plant, number of seed per pod, 1000 seed weight, seed yield per plant and fibre yield per plant. Highly significant differences were observed among the genotypes for all the characters. Substantial amounts of genotypic variance were also obtained for all characters. Fibre yield per plant was significantly positively correlated with plant height, base diameter, green weight and stick weight. Path coefficient analysis revealed maximum contribution of plant height to fibre yield per plant and this was followed by the contribution of base diameter.

Objectives:

To investigate correlations among the yield component characters and to find out the extent of direct and indirect effects of fibre yield components. Knowledge of these correlations may help in planning efficient breeding programme .

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the Jute Agricultural Experiment Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Manikganj, Bangladesh during April to August 2008. Eleven deshi jute genotypes are collected from four different countries. Among eleven deshi jute genotypes five (05) accession such as 469, 875, 2348, 2863 and 3337 are collected from Bangladesh. Besides these accession 1489 from Taiwan, accession 4374 from USA and accession 4615 & 4620 from Brazil. CVL-1 and CC-45 varieties (developed from Bangladesh Jute Research Institute) were also used in this experiment. The genetically pure and physically healthy seeds of these genotypes were collected from the gene bank of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Dhaka. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. A plot for each genotype was represented by 3 rows of 3.6 m length with a spacing of 30cm x 5cm. The middle row of each plot was harvested during average flowering stage for fibre yield. Rest of rows was harvested at the time of ripening the pod for seed yield performance. Data were recorded on ten randomly selected plants from each replication for nine characters namely, plant height (cm), base diameter (mm), green weight per plant (g), stick weight per plant (g), fibre weight per plant (g), number of pod per plant, number of seed per plant, 1000 seed weight (g), and seed yield per plant (g).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of this investigation indicate that a selection index giving proper weightage to different parameters such as plant height, base diameter, green weight and stick weight seems to be best method to produce jute varieties with acceptable yield.
