Evaluation of Breeding Performances of Improved and Existing Endemic Major Carps in Jessore Region.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Brood rearing techniques were not supported by the scientific method as the operators used high stocking densities to rear the broods. Consequently, fish took longer time to become gravid than the normal. Moreover, fecundity and size of egg became smaller than the normal. Most hatchery operators prefer to use hatchery originated broods as it is costly and difficult to collect wild broods, juvenile or spawn. Stocking density ranged between 15 and 30 kg/dec, which was 2 to 4 times higher than the recommended density for brood rearing. Feeding rate was 2 to 5% in the summer and 1.0 to 1.5% in winter. Maximum hatchery operators (66%) used handmade feed prepared by a combination of different ingredients containing 20 to 22% protein. Age and weight of broods were appropriate but acclimatization of brood in water tanks was not up to the mark. Broods are kept under showers for 1-2 hours and then applied preparatory dose. Resting time of broods under showers was not sufficient that should be 4 to 6 hours. At noon, final dose was applied and eggs were collected by stripping after 6 to 8 hours of final dose. During breeding season, 2 to 7 days before injecting, operators transfer and dump fishes from far away to a pond near to the hatchery.

Objectives:

The main objective of the project is to develop a protocol for hatchery operation by evaluation breeding performances of improved and existing endemic major carps under different conditions. Within this main objective, the specific objectives are as follows: Assessment of status of brood stocks of FSS and private fish hatcheries of Jessore; evaluation of induced breeding techniques of fishes; and determination of water quality parameters used in hatcheries.

Methodology:

There are 30 carp fish hatcheries in the Sadar upazila of Jessore district. Among them nine hatcheries were selected to evaluate breeding performances of improved and existing major carps according to their physical facilities and spawn production capacity. In most of the hatcheries skilled operators and fishermen were involved in spawn production. Species-wise data on sources of broods were recorded. Induced breeding techniques adopted by the private hatchery operators was evaluated. Moreover, fecundity, fertilization, hatching and survival rates of fishes was assessed. Based on the problems related to spawn production, a protocol for hatchery operations was developed after critical analysis of collected data from selected hatcheries of Jessore.

Achievement/Findings:

Breeding performances of improved major carps were found higher than that of wild and existing hatchery originated major carps. Improved carps required higher hormone doses than hatchery originated carps but less than the wild. Comparatively small egg diameter of hatchery originated broods was probably due to prolong hormone treatment as an individual brood is bred for 4 to 6 years. Latency period of wild carps was longer than the improved and hatchery originated carps. Fertilisation, hatching and survival rates were also higher in improved carps followed by wild carps. Wild and improved major carps became mature later than hatchery originated carps. Fecundity of improved carps ranged between 80 and 100 ova per gram of body weight while it is 75 and 90 in wild carps and 70 to 85 in hatchery originated major carps. One kg of improved carp spawn yielded 0.35-0.40 million, wild carp yielded 0.32-0.36 million hatchlings while it was 0.40-0.45 million for hatchery originated carps.
