Survey on Rodent Problem in Poultry Farm in Gazipur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A questionnaire survey on rodent problem was conducted among the poultry farmers of different upazillas in Gazipur district. Among the 468 farmers, 76.50% farmers had about 2000 birds and only 11.11% farmers had 2000 - 4000 birds. Maximum (58.55%) farmers had layer type poultry birds and 41.45% farmers had broiler type birds. They reared layer in the cage and they reared broiler on floor. About 56.84% farms were Katcha. According to the farmers (66.67%) rodent damage occurred at night. Maximum damage occurred due to food losses followed by eggs and chicken loses. Average loss per farmer was reported to be Tk. 18157.60 per year. Most popular control method to the farmers was Lanirat baiting (48.72%) followed by trapping (26.07%) and zinc phosphide baiting (14.74%).

Objectives:

To gain some basic idea about rodent control techniques in the poultry farm generally used by farmers.

Methodology:

A questionnaire survey on rodent problem in poultry farms was conducted among the farmers of Kaligonj, Kapasia and Sreepur upazila in Gazipur district. Scientists of Vertebrate Pest Division took the farmer's interview with a prescribed questionnaire sheet. It includes different questions on size and age of poultry farm, types of poultry bird, poultry rearing condition, damages by the rodents, intensity of damage, amount of loss, storage condition, control methods used by the farmers. All questionnaire sheets were carefully compiled, summarized and presented in different tables.

Achievement/Findings:

The number of small farms were higher than the large farm. About 76.50% farmer reported that they had about 2000 birds in their farms and 11.11% farmers had 2000 to 4000 birds About 58.55% farmers had "layer" type and 41.45% farmers had "broiler" type birds. More broiler farms were found at Kaligonj (76.07%) and Kapasia (51.56%) upazilla. Maximum farmers reared "layer" in the cage and they reared broiler on floor. About 56.62% farmers reared poultry in the cage and 43.38% farmers reared their birds on floor. According to the interview, 56.84% farmers had Katcha, 35.68% farmers had semi-pucca and only 7.48% farmers had pucca farm. All the farmers reported that rat was a problem in their farm. They were asked how many kinds of rats they had seen in their poultry farm. About 43.80% farmers reported 2 species, 17.95% farmers reported 3 species and only 1.71% farmers reported 4 species but 30.56% farmers had no idea on rodent species. About 74.36% farmers reported that maximum damage occurred during rainy season, while only 20.51% farmers reported that it occurred throughout the year. From this survey, it was found that rodents usually damage to the eggs, chicken, poultry food, and poultry houses. Maximum farmers (42.34%) reported that they lost about Tk. 250.00 due to eggs damage per month, 22.99% farmers reported 251-500 Tk. and only 12.41% farmers reported that they lost above Tk. 1000 per month.The total income per farmer per year was Tk. 5,95,837.20 and the total loss was Tk. 18,157.60. So the farmers lost about 3.05 % of their income due to rat damage. About 51.92% farmers used lanirat, 26.07 %), sued trap, 16.03 % used zinc phosphide and 10.93 % farmers used aluminum phosphide to control rodents in their farms.
