Bait Preference and Evaluation of Different Concentration of Zinc Phosphide Bait for Controlling Shrew.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The bait preference of shrew and effectiveness of 1 and 2% zinc phosphide bait for shrew control was carried out at Vertebrate Pest division, BARI. Shrew preferred cooked rice (7.25g/shrew/day) over dry fish mixed wheat flour (5.18g/shrew/day) and coconut (2.24g/shrew/day). For controlling shrew, 70% success was found in both 1 and 2% concentration of zinc phosphide bait, but the consumption of 1% zinc phosphide bait (6.51g/shrew/day) was higher than 2% zinc phosphide bait (4.47g/shrew/day).

Objectives:

To determine the food preference of shrew and (ii) to determine the efficacy of formulated poison bait.

Methodology:

Bait preference testing: The experiment was conducted inside the enclosure at Vertebrate Pest Division, BARI. The size of the enclosure was 6 x 4m. Five male and five female shrews (80.10g) were trapped at BARI campus, Joydebpur. Straw heap and damaged tin containers were provided for their nesting. Seven types of foods were were T1 =cooked rice, T2 =Dry fish mixed rice (cooked rice 80% + dry fish dust 20%), T3 = Dry fish mixed wheat flour (wheat flour 80% + dry dish 20%), T4= wheat grain, T5= Unhusked rice, T6= Polish rice and T7= Coconut meat. Each food was offered to the shrews in three different cups daily. Food cups were placed near the wall side in the enclosure. Position of the cups were changed daily to avoid position biasness. Each food cup contained 100g food. Consumption was recorded after 24 hours. Preparation of poison bait: For the preparation of 2% zinc phosphide poison bait, 2.5g zinc phosphide (80% a.i.) was mixed with 97.5g cocked rice in a cup. And for 1% zinc phosphide poison bait, 1.25g zinc phosphide (80% a.i.) was mixed with 98.75g cooked rice in a cup. Evaluation of different concentration of zinc phosphide bait: Only "no-choice" feeding test was conducted using1% and 2% concentration of zinc phosphide poison. Ten shrews were selected for each study. The animals were maintained in individual cages for a minimum of 7 days before testing. For each concentration, 100g of poison bait was provided in individual food cup. Bait consumption and mortality status was recorded after 24 hours.

Achievement/Findings:

Food preference test: The food preference of shrew is presented in table 1. The house shrew (Suncus murinus) showed different feeding preference on various types of food. They preferred cooked rice over dry fish mixed wheat flour and coconut. The cooked rice consumption per shrew per day was 7.25g, wheat flour consumption was 5.18g and coconut was 2.24 g. Unexpectedly, they preferred cooked rice (7.25g) to dry fish mixed rice (2.92g). Shrew does not like wheat grain (1.04g/shrew/day), unhusked rice (0.03g/shrws/day) and polish rice (0.87g/shrew/day). From this study it was clear that shrew likes soft food than hard grain. Efficacy of poison bait: The effectiveness of different concentration of zinc phosphide bait for shrew control is presented in table 2. No difference of mortality was found between the two concentrations (1% & 2%) of zinc phosphide bait. Out of 10 shrews, 7 (70%) shrews were found dead in both the concentrations of zinc phosphide bait. But the consumption of 1% zinc phosphide bait (6.51g/shrew/day) was higher than 2% zinc phosphide bait (4.47 g/shrew/day).
