Effectiveness of Aluminium Phosphide Tablets for Controlling Rodents in Artificial Burrow System.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four doses of aluminium phosphide tablet namely 3.0g, 1.5g,1.0g and 0.5g were tested against Bandicota bengalensis in an artificial burrow system . Hundred per cent success was achieved with 3.0g, 1.5g and 1.0g aluminium phosphide tablet and 60% success was recorded by using 0.5g tablet.

Objectives:

To evaluation aluminium phosphide tablet for controlling rat.

Methodology:

An artificial burrow system was constructed to simulate the natural burrow system. The length of burrow system was 11.37 meter. Plastic pipe (PVC) having inside diameter 6.8 mm was used for its construction. It had 8 bent including several elbows, T and other joints. The plastic pipes were inserted about 2 cm into the opening and fixed well . All the joints were adequately sealed with adhesive tape to prevent any kind of fumigant leakage. The total volume of the burrow system was 0.0413m3 The openings of the pipes were closed with tin lid. One rat was inserted into the burrow at least 30 minutes before starting the fumigation. After starting the fumigation, all the openings were sealed with adhesive tape. Required dose of aluminium phosphide tablet was placed on damp tissue paper to simulate moist soil. Four doses of aluminium phosphide tablet i,e. 3.00g, 1.5g, 1.00g and 0.5g were evaluated in this experiment. For each treatment, five Bandicota bengalensis were used. All the rats were individually tested. The burrow system was dismented after three hours of fumigation and the condition of the rat was recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

All the rats died at three dose levels of 3.0g, 1.5g and 1.0g of Aluminium phosphide. In case of 0.5g tablet three rats died out of five. One rat was found alive and another was found at moribond condition. These results proves that Aluminium phosphide tablet can successfully kill rodents even at 1.0g dose. Artificial burrow system for evaluating fumigants is a new techniques. Elias et al. (1983) advocated this technique for laboratory evaluation of fumigants. It has a number of advantages. For examples, it will provide initial efficacy data, permit comparative evaluation of different formulations or materials under controlled condition, permit direct observatians of animals exposed to the agent. However, this device has some disadvantages. It is an artificial environment. The test animals are probably under greater stress,and the dispersal and fate of the fumigants is not as it would be in a natural burrow system. This Experiment should be repeated and further tested in field condition before giving recommendation
