Screening of Cip Potato Germplasm for Heat Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five CIP potato germplasm with check varieties Diamant and Asterix were evaluated at ARS, Pahartoli, Chittagong, RHRS, Patuakhali and RARS, Jesore during 2012-13 for their suitability for heat tolerance. The trial was set up more than one month later of the normal planting season and harvested at 90 DAP where 3-4°C higher temperature prevailed than normal period of harvesting. From the trial it was observed that CIP- 139 produced average highest tuber yield (28.72 t/ha) in all 3 locations followed by CIP-6 (26.42 t/ha) and CIP 7 (24.6 t/ha), whereas Diamant and Asterix produced average tuber yield of 17.07 and 17.52 t/ha, respectively in all locations. All the tested CIP clones produced higher tuber yield than the check varieties Diamant and Asterix. In the trial, all the tested clones, CIP-6, CIP-7, CIP-127, CIP-129 and CIP139 found to be promising for heat tolerance.

Methodology:

Materials and Methods During 2012-13 cropping season, a field trial on screening of potato germplasm/varieties were conducted at three locations namely (ARS, Pahartali, Chittagong, RHRS, Labukhali, Patuakhali & RARS, Jessore). Five promising CIP clones CIP-6 (CIP 395192.1), CIP-7 (CIP 395193.6), CIP-127 (392820.1), CIP-129 (CIP 393536.13) and CIP-139 (396311.1) with two check varieties Diamant and Asterix were evaluated for heat tolerance trial at three locations. The tuber was planted on 20th December at ARS, Pahartali, Chittagong and RHRS, Labukhali, Patuakhali and 18th December at RARS, Jessore in three replicated plots of 3 X 3 meter size. Plant spacing was 60 X 25 cm. Fertilizers were applied @ 325-220-250-120 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. Full amount of TSP, MP and Gypsum and 50% of urea were applied as basal and the remaining amount of urea was side dressed at 35 DAP. Weeding, irrigation, earthing-up and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested at 90 DAP. All the yield and yield contributing characters data were recorded and were statistically analyzed. Plant vigor and senescence was recorded on 1-5 scale, where 1 is very poor vigor and 5 is highly vigorous while senescence data were recorded on 1-5 scale where, 1=0-20%; 2=21-40%; 3= 41-60%; 4= 61-80% and 5= 81-100% senescence.

Achievement/Findings:

All the tested clones viz. CIP-6, CIP-7, CIP-127, CIP-129 and CIP-139 found to be promising for heat tolerance and selected for further evaluation.
