Effectiveness of Different Kinds of Smoke for Controlling Burrowing Rodent.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Smoke was generated by burning two plant materials namely tobacco (Nicotiana tobacum) and chilli (Capsicum sp.) to expel rat from the burrows. In the laboratory, tobacco smoke expelled 60% and chilli smoke expelled 50% rodent from the artificial burrows. A mixture of tobacco and chilli smoke also expelled 50% rodents from the burrow. But in the field only 12.5% success was achieved by using chilli smoke.

Objectives:

To evaluate comparative efficacy of smoke materials in rodent control.

Methodology:

Smoke was generated in a closed oven. From the top of the oven one rubber tube was connected to a opening of the artificial burrow system. An air blower was used to pump the smoke into the artificial burrow system. The burrow system was constructed by using plastic pipe of 13.84 m. long and internal diameter 6.8 cm. It had nine bent and four openings. The total volume of the burrow system was 0.052 m3. Attempts were taken to simulate it with the natural burrow system in term of bents and number of openings. Smoke was generated by burning chopped tobacco, chilli and a mixture of chilli and tobacco. One trap was set at one burrow opening to capture the escaping rat from the burrow. For each treatment 10 B. bengalensis were used . Time required for the expulsion of the rats from the burrow was recorded. Several wheat fields at BARI,were selected to test efficacy of different kinds of smoke produced from tobacco, chilli and chilli-tobacco mixture. For each treatment 8 active burrow systems were selected at the booting stage of wheat field. The smoke was inserted through one opening at the burrow system. Two other burrow openings were kept open to set traps in them, all other burrow openings were closed by plugging with soil. Smoke was produced by the '' smoke generator'' and was passed through the rubber tube to the burrow system. Smoke was produced by burning 100 gm chopped tobacco and chilli smoke was produced by burning 50 gm chilli. Tobacco and chilli mixed smoke was produced by burning 25 gm tobacco and 25 gm chilli. observations were taken during the smoking operation to record whether the rat is coming out or not.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the plant materials tested tobacco smoke showed 60% success for expelling rodents from the burrows followed by chilli (50%) and chilli-tobacco mixed (50%). On an average tobacco smoke took 4 minutes 48 seconds for the expulsion of rat whereas chilli took 5 minutes 56 seconds and chilli-tobacco mixture took 7 minutes 42 seconds (Table 1). Average body weight of the rat was 165.20g. Field: In the field experiment only one rat come out from the burrow by using chilli smoke. Smoke generated from tobacco, and chilli-tobacco mixed failed to expel rat from the burrows.
