Studies on Vitamin and Amino Acid Constituents of Mulberry Leaves.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Amino acid and. vitamin content of mulberry leaves are the most important constituents in silkworm nutrition. Mulberry leaves are quite rich in amino acid content (]8.60%) and satisfy the requirements of armno acids of silkworm (Bose et al. l989) Mulberry leaf contains vitamins A.E, C and D which act as cofactor of enzymes and are needed in the amount of catalyzers level. Vitamin A is necessary for growth and development of soft and skeletal tissues through its effect upon protein synthesis and differentiation of the bone cells (Krause and Mahan, 1979). Horie et al (1966) reported that fresh leaves of mulberry contain enough B vitamin to support normal growth of silkworm. Silkworm larvae requires at least eight B vitamins especially. large amount of choline, inositol and vitamin C (Anon-1975).

Objectives:

To determine their nutritive value for feeding silkworm, Bombyx mori. L.

Methodology:

Tender and mature leaves of S1, S799, C776 (Indian) and Dudhia (Local) varieties Were collected. B-carotene (vitamin A), vitamin B (B1 and B2) and vitamin C contents of fresh leaves were determined according to the methods of Glick (1957), Anon, (1965) and Bessey (1944) respectively. Total & free amino acid constituents of fresh mulberry leaves were identified by two dimensional paper chromatography following the methods of Block and Boiling (1951) and Jayaraman (1985), respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Vitamins A.B1 B2 and C content of four mulberry varieties at two maturity levels were determined. B-Carotene (Vitamin A) content was found to be highest in S1 variety (I23.51mg%) followed by S799 (103.02 mg%). Dudhia showed the least B-Carotene (40.43 mg%) content. B-Carotene content ranged from 38.04 mg% to 120.00 mg% and 42.82 mg% to 127.02 mg% in tender and mature leaves, respectively. Vitamin B1 content ranged from 14.42 ranged % to 56.51 mg% and 20.08 mg% to 26.10 mg% in tender arid mature leaves, respectively.- Variety S799 showed the highest vitamin B (59.31 mg%) content followed by S1 (56.01 mg %). The least y value was obtained in Dudhia (17.25 mg%). Vitamin B2 content* of, tender and r:arare leaves were found.to be 0.332 mg-0.663 mg% and 0.340 mg%-0.670 rng% respectively. The highest B2 vitamin..con¬tent was observed in variety S1 (0666 mg%) followed by S789 (0.429 mg%), Dudhia showed the least value (0.336 mg%). As regards the vitamin C content of mulberry leaves, variety S1 (134.34 mg%) showed the highest value followed by S799 (110.20 mg%). The lowest value was re¬corded for C776 (69.94 mg%). Tender and mature leaves contained 67.70 mg%-106.40 mg% and 71.18 mg%-114.00 mg% vitamin C respectively. Free amino acid constituents of mulberry leaves identified were 12, 10, 7 and 6 in varieties S1 S799 C776 and Dudhia respectively. Bose et al (1989) reported that the number of amino acids aviailable in mulberry leaves is twenty of which 18 are in total (free+bound) form and 17 amtna acids are in free form. On the basis of the above results and discussion it is concluded that the varieties SL and S799 were found to be superior in respect of vitamin and amino acid constituents of mulberry leaves and may be recommended for quality cocoon production.
