Due to problem of threshing, a considerable amount of grain crops, particularly those which are harvested during rainy season, are damaged each year in Bangladesh. At present the total production of paddy and wheat are about 27 million ton. Almost the whole amount of these crops is threshed by traditional method, which is laborious and time consuming. To solve this problem a multi-crop power thresher was developed. Field performance test of the thresher was done with paddy and wheat in the year 2002-2003. The average threshing capacities were 788 kg/h and 340 kg/h for paddy and wheat, respectively. Threshing and cleaning efficiencies were 99 percent and 95 percent for paddy and wheat, respectively.

To test the performance of multi-crop power thresher for rice and wheat
The Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur had development a multi-crop thresher with the following locally available materials such as wood, MS flat bar MS rod, GP sheet, belt-pulley, bearing, nut-bolts etc. All efforts were made to keep the cost of the machine low and the operation and maintenance as simple as possible. Thresher functional unit are, namely, (1) farmer, (2) threshing cylinder with pegs, (3) threshing concave, (4) Hopper, (5) Sieve, (6) outlet chute, etc.
Frame: It is made of pieces angle bar of sizes 65 mm x 65 mm welded together. Its function is to support the machine and to keep it rigid.
Threshing chamber: Threshing chamber consist of cylinder and concave. The threshing cylinder is made of 1.5 mm thick MS sheet. The diameter and length of the threshing cylinder are 600 mm and 800 mm, respectively. The size of peg is 60 mm long, 12 mm wide and 12 mm thick. The pegs are fixed on threshing cylinder at an equal distance. Eight rows of pegs are also fitted on the threshing cylinder. The thresher was tested in Gazipur for paddy and wheat during the period of 2002-2003.
Research Report
The average threshing capacities were 788 kg/h and 340 kg/h for paddy and wheat, respectively. Threshing and cleaning efficiency are 99 percent and 95 percent for paddy and wheat, respectively. Cost of threshing for paddy and wheat was Taka 0.08 and 0.03 per kg, respectively. Power threshing saved 75 percent time and 50 percent money for paddy compared to traditional method. This thresher is recommended for threshing wheat and paddy.
