Species Identification, Density Evaluation and Green Weight of Weeds in Tossa Jute (corchorus Olitorius) Growing Areas of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Jessore, Faridpur and Rangpur during 2009-11 to identify the weed population (wd. popⁿ.) & green weight (grn. wt.) in tossa jute field and generate information. It was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications and jute variety O-9897 was used. Treatments were 3 locations viz., Jessore, Faridpur & Rangpur, and 2 weeding stage viz., 1^st weeding (20 DAS) & 2^nd weeding (50 DAS). Results revealed that 18 different crop affected weed species of which 10 major viz., Cyperus rotundus, Echinochloa colonum, Panicum javanicum, Cynodon dactylon, Physalis heterophylla, Paspallum distichum, Eleusine indica, Jussiaea repens, Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia microphilla were observed more serious to the crop. There were 6 families of weed species found to infest the plots of 18 species. Among total weed vegetation, sedge 52%, grass 37% and broad leaf weed 11% on the basis of wd. popⁿ. m^-2 and sedge 66%, grass 24% & broad leaf weed 10% on the basis of weed grn. wt. g m^-2. Infestation of sedge weeds mainly C. rotundus was very serious at Faridpur. Rangpur was also infested by C. rotundus. Plots of Jessore were seriously infested by E. colonum.

Objectives:

This study was undertaken to identify the major weed species and population associated with tossa jute under different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at jute research regional station, Faridpur (AEZ 12) and Rangpur (AEZ 2), substation, Monirampur, Jessore (AEZ 11) during 2009-11 to identify the weeds in tossa jute field and their population and green weight status at different jute growing areas. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. The jute variety O-9897 was used as study material. The treatments were three levels of locations viz., Monirampur, Jessore (L₁) Faridpur (L₂) and Rangpur (L₃) and two levels of weeding stage viz., 1^st weeding (W₁) at 20 DAS and 2^nd weeding (W₂) at 50 DAS. Data on weed density was collected from each plot at 20 DAS as 1^st weeding and 50 DAS as 2^nd weeding of the jute plants by using 1m´1m quadrant as per method. The quadrant was placed in three spots at randomly in each unit plot. In each spot all weeds inside the quadrant were counted species wise and their average values were taken as the weed population m^-2. After counting the weeds in each quadrant and completed washing species wise green weight was taken. Average weight of each weed species was expressed in gm^-2. The crops were harvested at field duration of 110 days in each location. Ten major species of weeds (Mutha, Khudesama, Basketgrass, Durba, Fuskabegun, Knotgrass/Gitlaghass, Chapra, Helencha, Borododhia and Sutododhia) population (m^-2) and green weight (g m^-2) had analyzed for this study. The mean difference among the treatments were adjudged by the New Duncan`s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
