Detailed Soil Survey: BINA Sub-station, Iswardi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The survey and research was conducted during 2001-2003 at BINA sub-station Iswardi to assist the authority of BINA with detailed information on soil and land resources of their farms. A diagrammatic map of the sub-station, RSS report of Pabna district, LSRUG of Iswardi and detailed soil survey report of RARS, Iswardi were used as base materials. Soil survey was carried out on the basis of field observations of soil, topography and other environmental characteristics. The soils were examined and described out of the pits following FAO guidelines. Identified soil series were described thoroughly in benchmark pits or standard size pits and altogether 28 soil samples from pits and 10 composite samples of topsoil were collected, air dried, processed and analyzed in the laboratory. A soil map, a land capability map and a land type map were prepared at a scale of 1:2500. Detailed survey report was prepared depicting mapping units description, soil fertility, land capability classification, soil classification and soil series description. Analytical data for soil nutrients were given in tabular form for different horizons. The report has been used for research oriented proper planning, innovation of site specific technology package and demonstration works.

Objectives:

The objectives of the research work were to assist the authority of BINA with detailed information on soil and land resources of their farms for research oriented proper planning, innovation of site specific suitable technology package and demonstration works.

Methodology:

BINA authority served a diagrammatic map of the sub-station. Along with the supplied map RSS report of Pabna district, LSRUG of Iswardi and detailed soil survey report of RARS, Iswardi were used as base materials. First a preliminary field visit was made to collect overall information regarding situation, landform, cropping pattern, etc. Then the soil survey was carried out on the basis of field observations of soil, topography and other environmental characteristics. The surveyor divided the whole farm area into small plots by using gridlines over the field survey map. Four traverse lines in East-West direction and 10 traverse lines in North-South direction were made. Each line was about 50 m apart Small pegs were set on each points where traverse lines dissected one another. Small pits were opened at these points with the help of spade and auger. The soils were examined and described out of those pits following FAO guidelines for soil description. Necessary supplementary observation were also made in identifying the soil series boundary correctly. Identified soil series were described thoroughly in benchmark pits or standard size pits and soil samples were taken from different horizon/layers. Altogether 28 soil samples from pits and 10 composite samples of topsoil were collected, air dried, processed and analyzed in the laboratory.

Achievement/Findings:

Three maps namely a soil map, a land capability map and a land type map were produced at a scale of 1:2500. Detailed survey report was prepared depicting the mapping units description, soil fertility, land capability classification, soil classification and soil series description. Analytical data for soil nutrients were given in tabular form for different horizons of the pits. Ground water level from 2001-2003 was also recorded on monthly basis. Limitation of soils, recommendation of potential future use, and evaluation of soil and land qualities relevant to crop production and irrigation were also made. The report has been effectively used for research oriented proper planning, innovation of site specific technology package and demonstration works by BINA sub-station authority.
