Studies on the Physico Mechanical Properties of Jute and Jute Products Treated with Indigenous Herb.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Each and every fiber has a specific limitation with regard to practical use, there is a tendency to modify properties of textile fiber by chemical and enzymatic treatment for extending its use. Jute fiber is coarse, harsh, stiff, highly hygroscopic, low colour and less extensible. Under excessive humid condition, the fiber is liable to microbiological attack leading to serious strength loss. These drawbacks of jute fiber restrict its value added use. So jute fiber requires modification for extending its use. Generally jute is modified by chemical and enzyme, which are very costly and harmful to the environment. But there are many important herbs, which are enriched with different types of bio-chemical, able to break lignin, make the fiber strong, soft and brighter in colour. For this reason, in this research work, 100% jute and jute blended yarn treated with natural herbs and their physical properties, whiteness, brightness, tensile strength were measured. After modification the brightness and whiteness of the yarn are decreased but strength increased. So, jute and jute products can be modified using natural herb where strength is important.

Objectives:

1.To modify jute and jute products using indigenous herbs

2.To reduce the cost of chemical modification of jute yarn.

Methodology:

100% jute and blended jute acrylic (20:80) yarn having count 8.3 ibs/spy and 10.80 lbs/spy collected from BJRI respectively. 65 green and mature Gubs were procured from Tongi. These Gubs were washed and pest using hammer, 3.2 kg, and 8 liter water mixed with it and kept 72 hours and finally Gub juice separated. The yarns immersed in the Gub juice with a material liquor ratio 1:20 and boiled at 100 degree C for 20 minutes. Finally yarns were dried and their physico -mechanical properties were measured by Photo volt meter and Pressley Bundle strength tester. In addition the treated and untreated fiber properties were compared.

Achievement/Findings:

100% jute yarn and jute acrylic yarn treated with gub juice at boiling point. It was found that the tensile strength of treated 100% jute yarn increased by 2.41% compared to the control sample. However, it decreased by 20.10% in case of treated jute acrylic blended jute yarn. The whiteness and brightness of both samples were decreased after treatment. It can be concluded that gub juice can be used to increase the fiber strength without procured exported chemical.
