Collection, Characterization and Conservation of Cotton Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at cotton Research Center Rangpur during the year 2011-12 to characterize the 8 (eight) collected lines. Significant difference was found among the treatments for all yield contributing characters. The highest yield was produced by JA/08/B (2108 kg/ha) which was followed by Ra-2(1971 kg/ha) JA/08/C (1958 kg/ha), and Ra-1(1922 kg/ha).The lowest yield was found in Ra-4(1698 kg/ha). The yield range was from 1698 kg/ ha to 2108 kg/ha. The ginning out turn (GOT %) percentage was found within the range of 37.74 % to 41.76 %.

Objectives:

To evaluate the mew germplasm in respect of morpho-physiological, agronomic and fiber quality characteristics .

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center Rangpur during the season 2011-12. Eight collected Genotypes encoded BC-0469, BC-0470, BC-0471, BC-0472, BC-0473, BC-0474, BC-0475, BC-0476, and one local variety CB-10 were included in this experiment. Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 (three) replications was followed. Seeds of each entry were sown one row in each plot. Unit plot size was 10m × 0.9m. Plant spacing was 90 cm × 60 cm. Two or three water soaked seeds were sown per hill during planting time but after final thinning one seedling per hill was allowed to grow. Passport data, qualitative and quantitative data were collected according to the rules of International Plant Genetic Resource Center(I.P.G.R.C.) To evaluate the germplasm, agronomic data such as number of vegetative branches per plant, node number of first fruiting branch, number of primary fruiting branches per plant, secondary fruiting branches per plant, days to first flowering, days to first boll split, plant height at harvest, number of bolls per plant, single boll weight, yield per plot and yield per plant were recorded. In all cases, data were collected from ten randomized plants of each row. Mean data of the treatments were used for statistical analysis through MSTAT program.

Achievement/Findings:

The tested 8 (Eight) germplasm vary from each other in different yield attributes so it should preserve in the “Gene Bank” with giving different accession number. Due to wide variation of mean values of different trait, effective selection and different breeding programme might be taken for variety development.
